I have a feeling Kanji's dungeon might be related.

If you ask me, the M rating is quite deserved here. I noticed way more adult language and sexual references than Persona 3 had. Some would argue that *Gun to head* makes Persona 3 the more "mature" game, but it was just darker, really. Maybe I'm just really desensitized, I don't know. Something about the constant S-bombs and some of the images and dialogue of P4 stand out as more M rated material to me. I mean damn, a boss that looks like a giant floating fetus with Harlequin Ichthyosis is pretty messed up to begin with. I'm surprised I didn't have NIGHTMARES after that fight.

Blood, , Suicide, Swearing, Sex, Mythos and Religious References, and gay overtones do not make a mature game.

If anyone considers of these mature then they need to reevaluate their definition of the word.

I think the terms you're looking for are offensive, crude, nightmare inducing and controversial.

In the EU it gets a Teen (or 16+) rating.

Violence, Drug references.

Huh ? WTF ?

One thing takes the "violence" into the 16+ territory. Nanako is kidnapped.

Drugs ? Yup. Tobacco. Thats the one that took this game from a 12+ to a 16+ rating.

The low level of partial nudity in this game would get the game moved from 7+ to 12+ but not higher.

I think the Nanako thing is easily the single factor that makes the people who rate games sit up and take notice. Dragging little girls off from their homes impinges on real-life social sensitivities.
