KOTRsssPosted 4/24/2012 4:22:12 AM | I played this game about a year ago (currently playing P3 PSN), and I was wondering if people could fill me in on what exactly was censored in this game.
The 2 things that come to mind are Kanji and Naoto's character arcs. With Kanji, it was abundantly clear that he was struggling with identity and sexuality, yet later on in his S. Link, they cop out with some nonsensical "I was just afraid of being rejected!" BS.
With Naoto it seemed to touch on transgendered issues, but it turned out that her desire to be male stemmed from preconceived notions about gender that she was able to discard.
So I suppose the first question is whether anything got censored or lost in translation during the localization, and then the next question would be if we know anything about things being censored or vetoed in the original Japanese release.
Anyone know the scoop? --- Gamefaqs has taught us that academic fields like literature don't exist because of teenagers that say "well that's just your opinion and I disagree." |
WazzupoPosted 4/24/2012 4:45:56 AM | There was stuff censored? WHATCHUTALKINBOUTWILLIS? --- chaostofu: Omg, I fell in love with the first one SirJanyse: Define first one so the rest of us can fight for 11 pages. |
FScellPosted 4/24/2012 5:17:11 AM(edited) | None of that was censored. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything censored in this game, or most Atlus releases.
The Bar scene seems like it might be, but is actually just really dumb in either version. --- Would have liked to run tests on the sea shells. |
Navyblack14Posted 4/24/2012 8:57:16 AM | Just because some characters didn't turn out the way you wanted them to doesn't make the game censored or their reasons "BS" dude. --- Soji Seta forever. Also Minako. |
Strain42Posted 4/24/2012 9:08:03 AM | The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that supposedly (and someone, please correct me if I'm wrong here) the Japanese game, while still not making it 100% clear, had slightly more moments pointing towards Kanji being gay.
But even if that is true, I dunno if I'd call it censorship, since the subject matter is still there. --- Don't forget to check out my MegaTen themed webcomics at http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Strain42/ |
SmashStrikePosted 4/24/2012 10:06:34 AM | I'll never understand why some people think Kanji having a hard time getting people understanding him replaces his sexual confusion. Like the two are mutually exclusive and couldn't both be aspects of his character. Anyways I don't think the Japanese was any more explicit about his sexuality than the U.S. version.
As for Naoto, it was pretty obvious she was wrestling with the way society (and her own family) viewed gender. I supposed lines like "I've always preferred boys' things." could be interpreted as possible gender identity problems but she came in late-game and had a big job being the exposition fairy so she didn't get much exploration of her character. --- Your twisted logic is that of an immature, egotistic brat! - Naoto Shirogane |
rascal45Posted 4/24/2012 10:25:27 AM | I've watched several scenes of the Japanese version for both of those characters and such. NONE of the scenes were edited in any shape or form. In fact, the US version made stuff more explicit at times. Example: After Kanji's shadow said he wished anyone would accept him.
JPN Version: Yosuke: "Stop forcing yourself on me!!"
ENG Version: Yosuke: "WHOA! WHOA! I really don't swing that way!!" --- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v127/CGrascal/12008103.jpg |

Right, because anything can happen as long as the writers say so! --- Gamefaqs has taught us that academic fields like literature don't exist because of teenagers that say "well that's just your opinion and I disagree." |

Yes, that is in fact the way that stories work. --- Would have liked to run tests on the sea shells. |
