What does this pvp based expansion mean for carebear miners? I have a toon from a while back that was a miner and I thought about checking out the expansion, but wasn't sure if I wanted to mine if this is expansion endangers him?

Nothing if you wish. The Faction warfare is completely optional to take part in, and the majority of the action takes place in Low-sec space. Additionally, alot of the pirates have setup near FW systems to catch players come to a from the fight, possibly freeing up areas to mine in with less worry.

There are multiple stations and asteroid belts that you can mine at with out having to worry about pirates
The best thing to do is join a corp which greatly increases your income

yeah, with hopefully some more people moving into the new territories and trying out factional warfare, there should be a little more breathing room from the people looking to attack miners.
otherwise, no real additions or ommisions in this expansion for miners.

There was an entire new region full of low sec created just for FW. A lot of pirates have flocked to around there, so I've been able to fly around Sinq in an Ishkur and rat in .2's without any troubles from player pirates. A mining op shouldn't be too hard if you know where to look.
