Gunslinger vs. Scoundrel?

Is there really that much point playing a pure DPS class when Bioware has stated that they plan to try and keep all DPS classes within 5%? What I'm basically asking is if Gunslinger is really going to provide enough extra damage to warrant losing healing as a side role. I mean, it's nice actually being able to do a Flashpoint every now and then, if you know what I mean...

Sharpshooters have that -40% anti-cover debuff, Saboteurs look like they have some pretty solid AoE.

Then again I don't actually play one, this is just speculation based on talents.

There is no way you can actually say 5% because both the Scondrel uses range and melee while the Gunslinger uses pure range and most likely does a better job at it. I'm loving my Gunslinger and don't see how the Scoundrel could do as much damage. Healing is nice though but I'd rather just be a dedicated healer. Since Gunslingers cant heal they should be stronger for balance issues.

I also feel that hybrids just aren't as good as pures. Let the healers heal! Wouldn't you rather have a fully qualified doctor tend to your rather than someone who sort of can?

Unlike real life I think versatility in MMOs is inferior to dedicated specialists.

But maybe that is just me.

From the brief amount of info I have found it seems like Gunslingers are more cover oriented while Scoundrels are actually more akin to close range combat? I kind of would prefer just being a long range nuke, having damage AND a healing class is very tempting though. I have done maybe 5 flashpoint missions on my lvl 30 Sent. -.-

Wrong. Scoundrels are good healers. Not some 'crap dps that can heal okay'

also Scoundrels get the ability to punch people.

thus they are automatically more badass than most non-trooper classes.

Bioware is where that 5% comes from, they said that all DPS classes, pure or sub-classes alike will only differ by around 5% in terms of damage.

Many people feel that is probably not true, but they do say that they will re-balance if necessary to meet that criteria. We are not talking about hybrids as I tried to explain, I'm talking about a Scoundrel fully specc'd for DPS, they would not be doing any healing.

I would hope my pure DPS class is stronger than a class who that has the versatility to play either, but again, NOT at the same time. But again according to Bioware they only want a 5% difference between sub-classes and pure DPS classes.

Yea, Scoundrel are main healers, just like Commandos and Sages, and I have had zero issues healing as one.

Scoundrel as a DPS class is almost all melee (all your best damaging abilities) and plays like a Rogue character, where you stealth for the jump on a target and frontload all your damage.

As a healer, they operate with HoTs, an instant heal and one castable "nuke" heal (their other castable heal is "meh" (Kolto Pack)). Very mobile, and extremely sustained: the ability to heal for hours on end once they get the HoTs and stacks rolling.

Gunslingers stand from max range (30m), behind cover and lay out damage from there. They hurt *a lot*, if you've ever faced one that is set up, but they are not nearly as mobile and lack the survivability of a Scoundrel, once someone gets in range.

They play very differently.

I do agree with this, but I really do want a more ranged oriented character...already rolling with a Sentinel.

Then again that would make me have two pure DPS classes T_T

Thanks.

I found this really helpful.
