Foxhound3857Posted 8/10/2012 10:03:30 PM | ...instead of going F2P and adding a cash shop, why not just lower subscription price? Maybe make it $9.99 instead of $14.99. --- My Guitar Hero 3 Wii FC: 4038-8152-2179 |
darkrevansPosted 8/10/2012 10:26:48 PM | Pay to play is going away..Wow will be the last big game and start droping subs when there pand exp flops in the usa but pick up subs in china and offset it and act like everything is fine. |
AceronPosted 8/10/2012 10:35:01 PM | Because, given an equal player base, F2P / cash shop generates more money. As much as people complain about having to pay, you'd be amazed how much money they're willing to part with when it's 'optional' --- Believe in yourself. Not you, that believes in me. Foxhound3857(Topic Creator)Posted 8/10/2012 10:42:19 PM | Yeah, I've played Knight Online so I know how it is. I know people in that game who have dumped $20,000 or more into their equipment on that game like it's pocket change.
Still, If they're going F2P with a cash shop, they might as well lower the subscription rate anyway. They know it's not worth $15 a month and very few are willing to pay that. --- My Guitar Hero 3 Wii FC: 4038-8152-2179 |
rowgue34Posted 8/10/2012 11:54:04 PM | There actually aren't many games that are pure free to play, and most of the ones that are don't do very well. Most games that offer free to play still have subscriptions and they still make up the bulk of their revenue.
Free to play is mostly used as an advertising tool to drive potential subscribers into the game. It serves a multitude of purposes. Firstly it serves as a less limited free trial that actualy gives people a chance to experience what a game has to offer before they're forced to decide to stick around or not. The traditional two week trial just isn't enough to get a proper sense of an MMO.
It keeps the servers far more active which is a good thing for player retention and attracting new subscribers. People are far more likely to play an MMO where they see lots of people rather than one where they see nothing but tumbleweed.
Subscriptions aren't going away. Most games are just going to start including it as an option from the start. The subscription/f2p hybrid model is what is taking over not true f2p. |
SoulTrapperPosted 8/11/2012 1:25:27 AM | There is clearly a market for P2P games, else this game wouldn't have sold more then 2 million copies and WoW would have went F2P a long time ago.
It's just that the game needs to be worth the 15/month. --- PSN: El_Coon |
xLexLuth0rxPosted 8/11/2012 10:43:10 AM(edited) | For a few games like DDO and LOTRO, the switch to F2P was very profitable for them. I'm of the belief that EA thinks the same will happen here. The fact that ANY fee is mandatory I think is a turnoff to many whether it's $15, $9 or even $5. --- "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist..."
