It's the predecessor to LoL, and if you've never played it don't bother because you'll never find a game.

Not because it's not popular, but because you'll be kicked when they see you've never played before.

LoL is a "different version" of DotA. DotA stands for Defense of the Ancients.

I'll give you the gist:

Back when StarCraft came out, around the peak of the popularity of it's map editor, somebody came up with Aeon of Strife, where you choose some Hero units and defend your base, etc. etc. The basic foundations for what you know as LoL. AoS became very popular.

Then, WarCraft III came out, and it also came out with one of the best map editing tools ever. Some dudes took Aeon of Strife and added a bunch of things, such as the shop and a ton more heroes, and created Defense of the Ancients, which became wildly popular. DotA is EXTREMELY popular and is played very often today.

A bunch of years later, the dude who had took the reins to DotA and was in charge of it's development after the original creator left, realized that he could create a stand alone game based on DotA. That dude made Heroes of Newerth. Then, another dude who also helped out with DotA's development process decided he could make a stand alone game based on DotA, but also make it free by using the micro-charge model (free to play, pay for additional content), and that game became League of Legends.

And also, somewhere, I can't remember where, some dude made Demigod.

"Noobs only" actually means "all pros join for a pubstomp"
