Who are canonically the most powerful champions?

Singed.

Xerath is literally immortal, indestructible and powerful "beyond measure". HE DESTROYED AN AREA THE SIZE OF A STATE JUST BY TURNING HIMSELF INTO A BEING OF ENERGY.

Any other answer is derp.

Grand Master Summoner?
If Jax actually is one of the top Summoners disguised as a champion in order to serve the League's interests, then he could be considered for one of the top spots. If he really is just some purple guy with only 3 fingers on each hand... then not really.

Immortal demigod figures:
Nasus, Renekton, Kayle, Morgana, Anivia, any of these could be a strong contender, not only for being the strongest of their realms, but also for their political connections. They all lead armies or nations or so on, and while Kayle might not win against Jax, Kayle and her entire planet of super angels probably could.

Brand is a creature created specifically for destroying the world. So yeah, he's kind of scary.

Leona is the Sun's champion, Diana is the Moon's champion, and Elise is the Spider God's champion. It is unclear whether or not that sort of position means anything outside of religious superstition, but assuming that the Sun is more than just a giant ball of burning gas, they each hold quite a bit more power than the average champ.

Soraka is a Starchild, which would probably mean something more if she were a Star-Adult instead.

Terrifying entities from beyond the veil of time and space:
The void champs are listed mostly because we don't really know how strong they are or how they work. If Kog'Maw is a worm dude with a metabolism so fat that it cripples his ability to outlast a clever opponent, then he's Teemo tier weak. However, if he is simply in a larval state, then what happens once he has had his fill and changes from a tiny worm into something bigger? All the void beings show a capacity for growth and evolution, even the tiniest voidlings. Although the League keeps them in check during their summoning, if left unchecked no one knows what they could be capable of.

Fiddlesticks gets a special mention for being an extra-dimensional incarnation of the concept of Fear itself.
Nocturne gets a special mention for being an ethereal weapon specifically designed to kill some of the most powerful creatures, Summoners. Though he never really got to reach his full potential before being caught, if he ever gets out...

Shadow Isle Champs
Honorable mention for us not knowing anything about them and how they work. If Mordekaiser is the reanimated husk of armor from the long dead Neromancer King and is slowly regaining his former self, that means something, etc.
Karthus not included, because his recent lore changed him from being mysterious to being fully explained and boring.

Political Leaders
Ashe, Jarvan, etc. While individually not that scary, they command pretty powerful nations. Especially assuming they can command the champs who serve those nations.

Dark Power Incarnate
Xerath would be super strong if he weren't dead and bound to a sarcophagus. But he's working on that.

Veigar would be strong if he weren't the evil incarnation of a race of really laid back gerbils. Like, if he were a house cat or a mildly aggressive sparrow, he could end the world.

Swain is at the very least using a giant demon bird to augment his own powers. At the worst, he is a giant demon bird pretending to be a crippled Noxian soldier in order to further his own ends. Afterall, there are no historic records of his birth, exploits, or existence prior to him showing up at a military hospital and then joining the army despite being wounded. I would not put it past Tzeentch to take over the body of a dead soldier and create an identity with it.

Sona is another champion who is probably being controlled by something that is not her. And besides, she can control someone's body just by playing 3 notes on her Etwahl at the same time. Imagine if she played a whole song during Crescendo instead, she could probably break reality or something equally scary.

So yeah, most of the strongest champions only 'could' be big deals. Riot's lore is noncommittal. :/

Jax is awesome and all, but I highly doubt he would be top 15 strongest, especially when we have demigods like Nasus/Renekton, archangels like Kayle/Morgana, and more supernatural beings like Fiddlesticks, Nocturne, etc.

Remamber that we don't know what the hell Jax is. Many eyes and 3 fingers?

Most lore goes into detail what champs did before joining the league, what made them worthy. But Jax has the lore or being so broken and powerful that summoners nerfed him in lore to make it fair to those same champions that did epic stuff to qualify...and then after geting nerfed into using a lamp post and having restrained powers he still wrecked everyone in the league. I do belive that his lore speaks for itself.

Jax isn't even up there. If you consider that he had some type of rigged matches or summoner help as implied by his (old? it's probably been retconned by now because lolriot) and that there was a wimpy selection of 40 when the league started which was when his streak happened, he's not even up there. No matter how strong you are as a nerd with a stick you can't compete against giant hailstorms where you can't even see your opponent.

The entire point of Jax is that he is the "Wandering Warrior" that cannot be beaten. This is pretty much shown through the fact that he is a "weapon master", but even without a weapon was just as unbeatable. There is always a way to win, and Jax will find it.

Please sir, this game is rated T. Star-Adult situations would be inappropriate.
