so who beats him lane wise and which champions are good against him teamfight wise?
seems like alistar and janna are best way to shut him down in teamfights
while having escape on ad carry is almost mandatory against jax

I haven't had to face Jax for a while, but I play him a lot. I know I have a lot of trouble against people with LOTS of range or mobility, especially if they can harass from far away. Basically, when people stay out of my leap range, they're keeping me from snowballing out of control.

Laning:

garen and renekton do well against him.
Fiora can out play him and snowball on him.
Udry can harass him early and ignore him late laning.
Trundle (from what I heard) pwns him because his ult hardcounters jax ult.

Teamfights:

CC and burst damage

Disagree with Garen, Udyr, and Renekton. Garen will soak the damage well and heal it off, but I don't see him overall winning that lane at all...Udyr needs to be close to Jax which is never a good thing. Counter stun for stun and Jax will win that trade. Same with Renekton.

Fiora vs Jax has been argued on here a lot. It's usually agree Jax has a slight advantage, but with good outside influence, it could go either way.

Trundle makes a lot of sense though. I just never see him. The few times I have seen him, it's in the jungle rather than top. I'm about to buy him though so we'll see.

Vayne is a pretty good ADC to have if you're talking about fighting a Jax.

Then there are champions like WW (who can deal with a jax in lane, although not really a counter) or Malz who can just shut him up.

I don't know that he still is, but Vlad was a competent counter to Jax in lane IMO.

Nobody. Jax is a hybrid which means they have to spend too much gold itemizing against someone who has insane burst /and/ sustained damage, not to mention a significant amount of tankiness from his ult and the wonder of NEVER BEING HIT BY AUTOATTACKS.

Even AP can't counter him as all he needs is merc-treads to outdamage them in trades with his good ol' hit-two-minions-then-leap-strike-onto-enemy combo that shears half of their HP off.

Jax confirmed for #1 top laner.
