People love the formula for the gameplay. It has RPG-style character progression, a painless RTS interface, and team-based player interaction. League of Legends is also designed to be fun and enjoyable for players of all skill levels, something that makes it more popular than DotA.

It is indeed saturated with elitist jerks and ragers, but I'm enjoying the game enough as-is and I came into it only recently.

At first the terminology is far more of a hurdle than the community is.

No, its not too late to join. Lol is a ladder-based game, which means that for the most part you'll only play with other new players.
