It's always funny to see LoL players mention Dota 2 as they pretty much always have no idea what they are talking about. Balanced champions compared to Dota....heh.

Free-to-play coupled with a crap ton of money spent advertising coupled with the addiction of MOBAS. It also doesn't have very many mechanics in comparison to other MOBAS and is much easier to pick up and understand. Champs all follow the same formula and don't have any unique mechanics. (Damn you Guinsoo)

Then there is ALWAYS something to unlock because champions aren't free and they release a new champion constantly. Then runes also cost a crap ton. People are obsessed with unlocks for some reason and love working towards things.

Basically:

F2P + MOBA addiction + advertising + unlocks

Then there is also the shameless champ design that targets 12-18 year olds.

Did you just say league was balanced?

You can stop talking.

Could you describe how a champion might be designed that would appeal specifically to people older than that?

I'm sure you could list me a bunch of reasons why League's character balance and aesthetic sucks, try to avoid answering my question with that.

I'm an aspiring designer. Sounds like this guy knows what he's talking about with the champ design, so I'd like to hear what he has to say.

If League's champion design is made specifically for the 12-18 audience (arguably), how does one appeal to audiences older than that?

Keep in mind that there is currently a significant 18-35 population playing League.
