How does one start this game exactly?

Building characters is so confusing and the players are not very forgiving of new players (To put it nicely..)

I've tried practicing solo with bots but that doesn't seem to really translated well into matches with more people, and I've tried watching videos of professionals but the terminology they use seems to be catered more for people who already know how to play.

I wanna like this game but I can't learn it no matter what.

I called Second Chance being overused before the game even came out.

Just use recommended items and try your best to get better.

Ignore what people say, just have fun and do your best.

Just keep on playing.

There are 9 year olds who play this game and have a basic grasp of it.

I would also try playing some co-op vs. ai games to get the hang of the champions and the game mechanics. Bots are really easy to beat, but you can at least test out some item builds and such without getting flamed because nobody cares about bot games.

They new recommended items are actually good. You should have seen when I was a new player the rec items were troll builds pretty much.

Also to start the game, buy a flask, 4 hpots, 3mpots and a ward. I know that's not what you're asking but the topic title reminded me of it anyway. :P

For the record, the recommended items aren't the best on every hero.

Talking to you, Vayne.

For the items, just build the recommended items.

If you still find that confusing (as there are multiple combinations) guides from http://solomid.net/ for your champion are available. Be warned though, the majority are outdated in terms of items (you don't need to know about masteries and runes for now).

As for termonology...

AD= Attack Damage. Items like the long sword and bloodthirster. People who AA (auto attack) like them.

AP= Ability Power. Spell casters love these items. AP items like Rabadon's Deathcap or Zhonya's Hourglass are AP.

MIA= Missing in Action. Someone in another lane cannot see their opponent anymore. Avoid going past the mid point in your lane or you might get killed (it will most likely be a higher level user who created a new account to stomp you for "fun")

Gank= When someone from another lane (or usually the jungler) appears in your lane out of nowhere and tries to kill you. Ward bushes and try to avoid going past the mid point (over extending) to reduce chances of being killed by a gank.

If there are any others you need help understanding, state them and we can help.

I'm very passionate about my Scrolls.
I love the way they feel against my skin in the moonlight.

Try out every champ you can to get an idea of how they work. Try out different summoner spells too. Learn what kind of items to build based on what your doing in each game such as: Attack Damage carry (ADC), Ability Power carry (APC), Jungler (something beginners should learn of though videos or seeing others do first), bruiser (damage dealer but tanky) and support. Along with other roles people come up with. Don't be afraid of screwing up, the people who complain tend to be bad or use smurf(extra) accounts for an unfair advantage against newb players anyway.

Last use the items the game suggest for you as the building blocks of your own builds. Find out what works and what doesn't and build to fit your style. Once you do, then learn to build to fit your style and situation in each match.

Should note however, that the machete item the game suggest isn't good for beginners as it is meant for jungle (something you will learn much later on and probably see examples of how it works first before trying it) So any items that deal damage to monsters should be ignored til later.

Edit: Oh another tip, do not buy second tier runes. Only the ones you can get right off the back and the ones that require you being level 20. The reason for this is that for ip price and effectiveness they don't make a big enough impact to be worth buying them where the tier one that you get off the back is dirt cheap and the tier three are the best. But other then that, don't worry too much about runes as by the time they are important, you should have a good understanding of the game.
