What was your biggest misconception when you started LoL?

That I shouldn't buy items at the beginning so that I could save up for better items. Luckily that only lasted 2 or 3 games before I played with a friend who corrected me.

Also, I don't know how many times I fell for the "press D to dance" messages from the other team. v_v

+1 for thinking Smite worked on enemies, and Ignite was therefore redundant.

Though, one misconception that took critical failure for me to break out of was thinking that, after I took Taric on as my first main (I only started earlier this week), I thought his W was more or less just useful for AoE damage against groups of minions, not even taking into account its passive benefits. This was all well and good when I had been left alone to solo bot in co-op matches, but when circumstance had me partnering with a Tristana on mid who ran forward and expected me to simply save her through pure virtue of me being Taric, I ended up panicking and investing as quickly as possible to max the stun (less cooldown to let her escape pressure more often) and heal (because her ass was dying). So glad people I knew from the IRC chat I regular were able to set me completely straight on that one.
