Is there some kind of formula on how much I gain/lose elo?

You lose more elo because Riot thinks your elo is too high, and they're trying to lower it.

Are you still in placement matches?

People always complain about this, but I have never in my history of playing ranked, lost more Elo in losses than I gained in wins.

tl;dr version

Teams are matched up based on Elo

Elo is not always equal, one team is favored

The favored team wins LESS Elo than if the unfavored team wins.

Example,

1500 Elo Avg team fights 1350 Elo Avg team.

If 1500 Elo wins, you win little.
If 1350 Elo wins, you win a lot.

If it was a flat say +/- 25 per win/lose. A team 1500 could easily get way ahead even though they are only beating up 1350 teams.

It's based on queue times and server size.

If you are winning little and losing a lot. It means you are beating teams you should beat and then losing to teams you shouldn't be losing to.
