Brand and Xerath are both very good yet underplayed AP casters.
Zed is pretty good but hard to play well. Picking up Zed will be a bit of a project. --- http://www.last.fm/user/bwlfro5

Xerath excells as a siege champ. If you have a strong frontline (or a bunch of poke champs with strong disengage) he can whittle the enemy down pretty easily. Unfortunately he's not a duelist, nor is he a burster, so he takes a large amount of skill to play.
Brand has awesome burst and good AoE damage with his ult. The problem is that his W and Q are skillshots, pretty easily avoidable ones at that. If you can hit his abilities he's unbeatable, if the enemy dodged then you're SoL.
Zed has awesome burst, is super safe, and can duel with the best of them. He can burst 1 target for HIGH damage, but once his ult is down he's much less effective.
Poke: Xerath>Brand>Zed in damage
Sustain: Zed(No mana)>Xerath=Brand
My rating: Zed>Xerath>Brand (but this is only me) --- "Whats the penalty for dodging in ranked?" "Phreak comes to your house and punches your screen."

Brand. You can't really lose lane and good teamfights. --- "I will blast you with concussive force!" - Galio

High mobility has its way with him. Zed, Ahri, Talon, and Akali can give him big problems. --- "Whats the penalty for dodging in ranked?" "Phreak comes to your house and punches your screen."
