Focus on wards rather than items as support
At least if winning is important.
The common link between all the enemy supports that lose is that they do not buy many wards.
Some think sightstone is enough, while others think sight wards are enough.
They couldn't be more wrong.
Vision wards and sight wards should be purchased, ideally spending 400 gold for 2 of each if possible. (or more!)
In ward wars an ORACLES ELIXIR is a MUST.
This allows your team to make PLAYS. It denies their team from making plays.
Vision wards allows your team to TAKE OBJECTIVES. They also deny their team from taking objectives.
The combination of these two will WIN GAMES. Items may make you more resilient, or do more damage... but at the expense of objective and plays? I think not.
The only items supports will end up with are:
Ruby Sightstone, Boots(sometimes not even) and Shurelya's.
However in a close and drawn-out game there will be some excess gold.
With an AP support like zyra or lux it's not uncommon to have items like a deathcap or morellonomicon (built from pick).
For a utility or tank support it's not uncommon to have items such as Twin Shadows, Locket, Aegis, and Frozen Heart.
The mistake most supports (who lose) make is that they attempt to RUSH these items at the expense of wards.
Sightstone is enough for green wards, buying a few purple wards is advantageous. Everyone can (and should) buy wards but (most of the time) it's only efficient for the support to build support type items so they shouldn't neglect to build them.
You should never skimp out on wards, but having an early SR or another big item mid game can make a huge difference in a fight.

LoL IGN: Greedy
Everyone should ward... Don't run into bushes chasing someone without dropping a ward in it first. It's not just the support who wards... Except maybe at the very beginning of a match...
Also, tip... don't drop your wards early in the match. If you run straight from base to the turret when the game begins and drop a ward you're just wasting half it's life cycle. If you want to see in the bush before the game begins and you get there fast enough just go in the bush. If you take your time and don't have allies to back you up then don't even bother with the bush and hug your turret until minions spawn.
Also, Wards aren't just for the bushes around the lanes... and you don't always have to drop them in a bush... If there is a stretch where you know mid runs to gank bot or top go ahead and drop a ward further up so you get more warning.

Who are you and why are you telling me what to do?
Talk is cheap.
I believe it was TPa's support, who said almost the exact opposite as you. He is thge world champion, guess i'll go with what he said.
Deanyzy posted...(most of the time) it's only efficient for the support to build support type items so they shouldn't neglect to build them.
When's the last time you saw a mid build Shurelia's? Obviously the brackets refers to Runic Bulwark and Locket being stupidly good on junglers but generally there's way better items for laners to buy since they'll have access to more money.
Okay so you MADE DEM PULAYZZZZZ
Then you realize both teams are equal skill and the enemy turtled after you made plays.
22 minute mark... you (support) have ruby sight stone, boots of speed, oracles activated, and 3 vision wards. Enemy support has a twin shadows, merc treads, ruby sightstone, and reverie. GUESS WHO WON MID GAME?
This but unironically.
Okay so you MADE DEM PULAYZZZZZ
Actually that's impossible. At the 22 minute mark if you made them plays you would have a significant gold advantage and their nexus should be falling in about 2 minutes time.
