Proccing varus passive heals him if he has spellvamp. But as a AD carry he gets Lifesteal because his AA's do more damage consistently over time.

Oh god, are people really giving you these serious answers? Some people have no idea.

General idea.
Auto attacks get lifesteal
Abilities that apply on hit effects get lifesteal and not spell vamp.
On-hit effect abilities (teemo poison, Elise's spider form) get nothing. (Exception, Cho'Gath because his is weird)
Anything else (true damage, magical, physical) gets spellvamp.

If you have any questions about an ability

There are two exceptions to the auto attack rule. Twisted Fate's W and Poppy's Q are both auto attacks, but they're converted entirely into magic damage, which ends up making spell vamp, not lifesteal, affect the ability.

Some on-hit abilities benefit from spell vamp, but it's definitely a case by case basis. Jax's E and ultimate both proc spell vamp for example, but Akali's passive does not.

There's also Warwick's ultimate giving lifesteal temporarily, but I have no idea how that actually works.

Edit: Three exceptions. Mordekaiser's Q as well.

Don't get lifesteal or spellvamp on AP Yi. DO get lifesteal on AD Yi.

I've figured this out through play, which is what started our discussion. I argued AP YI had a huge heal as a skill and needed neither vamp or steal. Thanks for agreeing.

TF's W is converted to an ability. The fact that it's magic damage is irrelevant.

Warwick's ultimate makes him execute a series of partial-damage autoattacks that proc on-hit effects. That's why you build WW with items like Malady/Wit's/BOTRK.

So Jax's W and every third hit from his Ult passive both use spellvamp? Not lifesteal?

Lifesteal procs on AA, spellvamp procs on virtually any damaging spell, regardless of physical/magical damage.

An example of a concise and simple answer.

Short answer: yes. I think it's because they're still classified as an ability, despite being technically an attack modifier; it's hard to explain in detail, but I think you'll find these links surprisingly informative.
