went 0/4 in lane to riven in a ranked game recently
dived her with the last second of my ignite ticking... gave first blood
then her barrier/ignite on top of the best friend sword just made my life hell
the really annoying part was she wasn't even a good riven i just couldn't do seal the deal between that one eff up and her double combat summoners, every time i died she had like 50-100 health left
why didn't i just go panth, it's like garen only she literally has no chance --- Standby for original and insightful thoughts.

It's a pretty easy lane for Garen, but I wouldn't say it was a counter, more of a skill match up. --- | http://i.imgur.com/RkcG6az.jpg | http://i.imgur.com/DD2Ja.png |

it's a skill matchup, garen has the advantage because his silence interrupts riven's dps combo (prevents her from Q auto Q auto etc) and his spin punishes riven for meleeing.
Riven has a lot of outplay potential, though.

Garen does well versus most AD casters. His shield blocks a lot of the damage from their initial combo start and then his silence denies them to finish their combo. Then you just spin and win every single trade. Renekton, Riven don't do well against a Garen. --- ~Rave

It's more of a skill matchup. It's really difficult if Riven doesn't max E though. --- Walking the path of heaven, the man who will rule everything.
