If they have hard CC combos: Cleanse.

If they have high personal / burst damage (especially finishers): Barrier.

If they have walk-in initiation and heavy chasedown: Ghost.


In other words it's very matchup specific. Against Gragas, the only meaningful option is Barrier. Against a Ziggs, probably the same answer.

Against a Riven the options are Ghost or Barrier.

Against an Elise jungle + whatever mid with more CC, Cleanse.

If the early game is not as important, but you want midgame teamfight "sustained defense"/kite, then Ghost is a good choice. Especially against, say, an Olaf jungle.


By default, Ghost is generally not useful in midlane because the lane is short. Ghost becomes mostly a midgame pick, not early game.

Edit: Against Rammus, cleanse 100%. Against Hecarim, Ghost is actually decent. Against Eve or Lee, Barrier is probably the best bet, or dependent on your mid-opponent.
