im fine with it...the League honestly did very little to help the story.

every champion needed "a reason" to join and stay at the league...for some there was no reason that would ever make sense.

Summoners were OP god-mages who were basically puppet masters over all the supposedly awesome champs we play as. Mind links meant any champ with a secret or agenda shared it with everyone who ever summoned them.

The league and summoners held story back.
The only two major stories this really effects is Noxus vs Ionia...since the league match is what ended the occupation, and Kalamanda, since the league and the Journal of Justice were heavily involved in that.

The thing is, LoL never really seemed to give the league a real chance either. I mean, we had one event that actually affected plot with the Noxus/Ionia event. That was really it. They never seemed to take advantage of the awesome premise.

As for motives, just say it pays really and provides a decent living for some if you can't think of something (or in cases like gnar, held by the institute for not having them run wild)
