If I buy this, am I also required to drop $30 on WoL even though it's completely outdated content and I know how the story goes? Or can I just buy this and play the campaign and online standalone?

Yes, you need to spend the money to buy WoL as well if you want to buy HotS. It's worth it though.

How is it possibly worth it to blow $30 on an old game just so I can play this?

If you don't like the older game, what makes you think you would actually like this game? The game hasn't changed. Maybe slightly upgraded graphics but still the same base just now in the zerg shoes instead of terran.

Its called an expansion for a reason and it is also half the price of WOL when it was released.

1) You can get Wings of Liberty for $20
2) Wings of Liberty's $20 + Heart of the Swarm's $40 = $60, the price of a typical new game (and the price of Wings of Liberty at launch)

So, really, what's to complain about? If it was standalone, everyone would pay $60. Now, only you pay $60.

It's not that I didn't like it, but I know the campaign story already, and the online aspect would be HotS exclusively, so it feels like paying $30 just to get to the register.

It's an expansion pack. Deal with it.

End of topic.

I shall deal with it by not buying either game, thank you.
