Having trouble with Last Rites (Bonfire of the Vanities)

This is the mission where you have to kill one of Savonarola's lieutenants. It's the entranced preacher at the top of the Duomo (or something). I try to make my way from the back but I always get detected. I've also tried coming from the front but from there I couldn't find a spot to climb to the top to kill the guy. What's the best strategy to do this?

If you're looking for an easy and robust way to complete the mission, take a look at the second clip starting at 4:25 in this video:

It shows a route up the "north face" of the Duomo where you can avoid encountering any guards. Reacher used poison but you could just as easily finish with the hidden blade, throwing knives, etc.
