I was thinking this last night. It's not a traditional RPG, but this game has sucked me in with immersion better then any RPG I can remember playing.

Ug…can we all please stop this habit of calling every game under the sun an “RPG”? God, it’s tiresome. Just because a game has you exploring or collecting stuff or leveling does NOT make it an RPG.

Very simple solution…look at a game and find the one part of the gameplay that the game displays the most….that’s the genre the game is in…the rest if fluff. This game has you shooting stuff the most. So it’s an action game, or a shooter.

I don't know what you guys do in the game, but I play the role of a cowboy in the game. It's a game where I play a role. One might call it a Role Playing Game, even.

@jefferyunger
By this logic, every game is an RPG.

There was this one RPG I remember playing. It was really fun, I played the role of a bird that was really mad so I spent my time smashing stuff.

I played this role playing game where you played a rookie SAS operative fresh out of selection uncovering
A terrorist plot to Nuke the united states. I really felt immersed by playing from his point of view.

I would like to hear what your definition of an RPG is then.

Going by what you said above about a game fitting into a genre based on the gameplay it displays most, then games like Final Fantasy are turn-based strategy games, and not RPGs.

As a graduate from a school of game designers and programmers, every game is technically an "RPG" because you assume the role of a specific protagonist. Just that "RPG" started to have a more specialised term. So technically, they aren't wrong to call it an "RPG" but if you wanna get into specifics, they are 'wrong' to call it an "RPG" because it lack the "requirements" to be deemed an "RPG".

So yeah...it's funny that way.
