Finding all hidden icons

Through some technical wizardry, I've obtained a decrypted version of my save file. Unfortunately, it's not as helpful as I would have hoped.

Here's what's stored in the save file regarding the hidden icons:

0F 07 0F 07 0F 0F
03 07 03 03 07 03
03 03 01 01 03 03
03 01 01 07 03 07
03 03 03 03 01 03
07 03 01 03 03 07
01 01 07 03 03 01
01 00 00 00 00 00

The way it's storing the hidden icons is in binary by level. So the first level (1-1) has a byte of F, which means 1111, in other words, we've found 4 icons on that level.

Unfortunately, this doesn't tell us how many there are. Had we missed one icon in 1-1, the listing could be 1110, 1011, 1101, or, worst of all 0111. The problem is, if it was 0111, that's indistinguishable from a level that has only 3 icons where we've found them all.

Had we found a level with a listing of something other than 1, 3, 7, or F, it would instantly tell us that that stage contained the other icon, but there isn't one. It does let me tell where I missed icons on my first profile, but that's about it.

I actually don't really know anything about binary code. Do the 00's on the remaining 5 levels of world 8 tell us anything? It would be nice to at least rule those out. I sure wish there was more useful information in the coding that you acquired.

Unfortunately the zeros just mean we haven't found any icons in those levels. It doesn't tell us whether or not there are any.

In theory I could try altering the values in the save file, but this could potentially end disastrously, so I'm hesitant to try it on anything other than an emulator. And unfortunately the Wii emulator can't use retail discs.

Anyway, one other thing that I was able to do was compare the icons I found in my previous save to the ones we've found here, and I can confirm that I hadn't found any more icons there than I have here. That means that every time I thought I had found something previously, I was just mistaken.

I'm going to collect what we have into a guide and submit it. Finding outside help may be our only chance of finding the final icon.

So far 20 whole people have read my guide. I can only hope one of them will find the last icon.
