Ultimate Technique, Dash Jump, Counter Questions

#1Eric037Posted 4/27/2012 6:20:51 PM
I just started this recently and haven't played any of the 3D Ninja Gaiden games before. I'm trying to get into using Ultimate Techniques.

1. I know to hold Block to avoid absorbing Essence. But when I let go of Block to start charging my Ultimate Technique, more often than not the Essence gets absorbed too quickly and it doesn't go towards speeding up my charging.

Is there a certain way I'm supposed to do this to avoid having it absorbed before my charging starts? Do I need to be a certain distance away from the Essence? Does there have to be a certain amount of Essence floating around? Or is my timing just off?

Also, are there any other situations besides holding Block that will keep Essence from being absorbed before I'm ready to use it? I want to know if I'm "safe" from it any other time so that I don't have to constantly hold Block. Does it absorb while I'm in the air, like if I'm jumping around trying for an on-landing Ultimate Technique charge?

2. How do I Dash Jump? I've seen it mentioned a few times but I don't know what it is or what its use is. The button input for it I've seen looks almost like Reverse Wind, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

3. Sometimes when I Counter, I'm sure that I did an instant dismemberment but other times I don't. Is it just random, or does it depend on the weapon/attack?

At first I thought I was doing it wrong and not Countering at all since I was getting a bunch of "automatic" dismemberments at first but then they stopped and I just seemed to be doing weaker sort of knockback attacks.

from the way i see it, your timing is off. NGS2 or NGS1 (PS3 ver) or NG1 or NG2 or NGB (XBOX ver) designed by former Team NINJA leader is all bout timing like a fighting game.

yes to avoid absorbing Essence is by holding the block button, if you let go Ryu will absorb it. almost all veteran players always hold block button when in fight, you can still move around by dashing or dash then press jump. most of average players such as myself do UT spamming whenever in trouble, the move is hold block button, dash, jump away from enemy, shuriken or bow(while in the air) and charge UT before Ryu feet touch the ground.

in NGS2 counter to delimb, yes depends on weapon and counter move to delimb enemy, Enma's Fang counter do not delimb thou.

oh yeah, you may not get what i'm saying, the easy way to understand maybe by watching how pro play the game. here's some link might help you:

1. onlanding UT is preferred as you can still keep holding block as you press triangle for the UT. what you do is mario jump on some guy, as you descend from the mario jump, press traiangle and you will land and do UT automatically

there's a distance when you become too far and essence some coming towards you, but as long as you are close, any time you let go block button, you absorb essence.

2. dash jump = dodge jump. press guard, press a direction, and hold it in the direction you want to jump to and press jump, onlanding, press guard again.

you can basically just hold forward, alternating guard and jump to do this.

3. the automatic limb removal only works on level one enemies. for example, dragon sword SS counter has very high chance of removing a leg from dual sword ninjas, archers, and tech ninja with green visors, but it doesn't work on claw ninjas. claw ninjas have much higher health bar and you have to wear them out before you can remove their limbs.

this is different from Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox 360 where any limb removal move have 100% chance of removing a limb

Thanks for the videos and help.

1. I didn't know you could dash then also jump while Blocking. I've only been dashing. I guess that's the only way to do on-landing UT with Essence then?

Out of curiosity, if I wanted to do just a ground UT with Essence, what is the timing for that? Do I have to switch from Block to Triangle immediately, leaving literally no time in between the two that I'm not holding one or the other? I'm finding it hard to practice since I can only do it during a fight and there's little time in between enemy attacks to let go of block.

2. Oh. Dash Jump is literally dash then jump, haha. Is that basically for cutting down the recovery speed of just plain dashing so that you can move around faster?

3. So even on the weakest enemies, no move is 100% guaranteed to delimb? Except maybe Guillotine Throw into a wall and Izuna Drop. What about Flying Swallow? Sometimes I cut the heads off full-health enemies, but lately it hasn't been doing it much (on the same enemies).

This is a separate question I forgot to ask: Is there a way to skip cutscenes? I started this game a while ago but had to put it down for a while. When I started back up I just deleted my save and started a new game, and want to skip the cutscenes I already saw. I've tried all the buttons but none of them let me skip.

the easy way is, watch those vids and visit their channel to watch more NGS2 vids and experiment them yourself. that's how i do it :) you can do it :D

oh you can skip cutscenes by pressing START button more than 3 times.

I did watch the videos, thanks.
I still don't know how to effectively do a ground Essence UT, but I just use on-landing instead anyway...

I pressed Start a bunch of times, but it never skipped cutscenes. Maybe you have to see them at least once before it lets you skip? I guess I'll try it on Chapter Challenge or something.

on landing UT is better cause it's much safer(you can throw shuriken or bow before landing) n faster than just charge on ground. ground Essence UT works well when you far from essence.

bout cutscenes maybe so cause when i play story mode i didn't skip cutscenes.

OK, thanks.
And yeah, seems that you have to see the cutscenes once before skipping them. I couldn't skip until Chapter Challenge.

Well, all things considered, these are all questions of someone who really wants to get better at this game. I like seeing that.

Anyway, standing UT can be done if you just charge. Essence will come to you automatically. The only way you can do standing UT is if you hold T while the enemy is busy dying and his essence comes out of his body. Either way, it's not really useful nor stylish. And for me, Stylish matters. Keep your questions coming dude.

Fear not the weapon, nor the hands they lay in, but the mind that wields them both, for that elucidates the true nightmare that stands before you.

Thanks.
Yeah, the timing and stuff for standing UT seemed too much trouble and not worth it. I eventually found it more effective to dash jump, shuriken, then on-landing UT.
