Should I get this game?

#1Halochief6Posted 11/8/2012 12:26:01 AM
Initially i had little interest in this game. But recently I've gained some, out of nowhere really. So I'm wondering if I should end up trying to get the game. I have a few questions if you guys don't mind answering a few.

What are your thoughts on the game?
Is it overly hard? I mean past the point of challenging hard and into ridiculous and frustrating hard.
Should I have played the first 2 games?
I probably won't play the MP, still worth it?

Any help with those questions would be great. Thanks guys.

One of the best third person shooters this generation.

Nope.

Yes. Both are classics.

MP is a blast, but it's not very populated, so your mileage will vary.

I don't want to play them just because they are "classics". "Are they necessary for me to appreciate Max Payne 3?" is what I was trying to ask.

The other two are not necessary storywise for this title.

You will appreciate some characters a bit more (Brewer, mentions of Mona) but only for the flashback missions they are featured in. Even then, the story dwells on events happening NOW, with only a mention of the previous games story.

If anything, play Max Payne 1 -- one of the most story driven games from the old gen systems.

I just finished Max Payne 3 and it was one of the best third-person shooters I've played. Each mission provides a lot more action than the last and the game adjusts certain equipment if you fail (e.g. they provide you more painkillers and ammo if you continuously fail a section).

One of the best stories of redemption, vengeance, and loss.

I'm pretty sure the Crucible was supposed to harness the dark energy of Haestrom to destroy the Reapers

Single player is a blast, the multiplayer has only gotten buggier since release.

No it's the perfect challenge
Should I have played the first 2 games?
Not, really. They haven't aged that well.
I probably won't play the MP, still worth it?
Yes. I play mutiplayer weekly but it's becoming a clusterfudge of cheaters.

It's now $19.99 brand new at my local Best Buy. I'd say its worth getting for 20 bucks. I think it's only on sale for a week though.

Walmart is selling it for $15 this Thursday and K Mart is selling it for $8 I believe. With any luck I'll get it for one of those prices.

I picked this up for cheap (15 in UK), the game is OK but not brilliant in my opinion. The actual gameplay is hugely satisfying and great fun for the first few levels, but there's no new ideas or gameplay development as you progress and I felt the game became a bit of a slog around the halfway point. The story and style of the cutscenes is brilliant (IMO - I could see why some people don't like it though) and you'll want to finish just to complete the story. There are some very annoying things (tiny reticule, getting hit in cover, last stands when stuck behind cover, bullet dodges leaving you exposed on the floor and then Max getting up into a full standing position before doing anything else, and I fell through the floor at least twice and had to restart the game) but I was able to ignore these on my first playthrough.

I'm currently doing a hard playthrough but the unskippable cutscenes, the above issues and enforced change of playstyle (on hard you can not get away with diving into a room and trying to headshot 6 enemies, you have to stick in cover and can't pop out for more than a second) are making this hard work. I think I'm going to stick it out but think I'll give New York Minute a miss. I haven't even tried multiplayer, not a big fan of competitive multiplayer in general and keep hearing it's a buggy, unbalanced mess.

That turned into a wall of text so in summary if you can get it cheap you should get one good playthrough out of it and enjoy the story and how it is presented but don't expect much replayability.
