How do I use the Zen Garden effectively?

#1EmoKangarooPosted 6/16/2009 4:18:48 PM
I have no idea what I'm supposed to do to get the maximum profit from Zen Gardens. So far, I'm only buying Marigolds because that's all that Crazy Dave has. So what do I do?

I just feed it water/fertilizer, then when do I sell it? A fully grown Marigold sells for 3k right?

And I bought Stinky the Snail. I think I'm supposed to buy him for "happy plants," whatever they are. Are happy plants another species of plants or are they just Marigolds, but you play music to make them happy. What are happy plants???

And when you have happy plants, they continuously give out money right? So when I get Stinky the Snail to collect it for me, do I just leave the computer alone while he collects it, or can I exit the Zen Garden and still have Stinky collect it? Can I minimize Plants vs Zombies while he collects the money?

Thanks!

'-- 310: Growing and Selling Marigolds ---------------------------------------'

Crazy Dave sells three potted Marigolds for $2,500 each at his shop, restocked
daily. Plants in the garden start as sprouts, but can be grown with water and
fertilizer. Sprouts grow into young plants, then medium plants, and finally
mature plants. Mature Marigolds can be sold for $3,000 each.

While it takes fertilizer to grow plants, each stage of development grants you
a reward, culminating in a diamond for each Marigold reaching adulthood. These
bonuses along with the profit of $500 per plant allows you to earn some cash
without playing the game's combat levels.

'-- 320: Collecting Gold from Happy Plants -----------------------------------'

If you're leaving the computer unattended for a while, you can also earn money
from happy plants. Making happy plants is similar to growing them, but instead
of fertilizer they want music from a phonograph or a spritz of bug spray. Both
the phonograph and bug spray can be purchased from Crazy Dave. When a plant is
satisfied, its base will be glowing and it will produce coins for about a day.

Once you make your plants happy, you still need to collect the coins. Doing so
manually is rather dull, so we enlist the help of Stinky the Snail. You can
purchase Stinky the Snail from Crazy Dave. Stinky helps you by collecting the
coins that drop from plants. Unfortunately he falls asleep after a couple of
minutes, so you need to feed him chocolate to keep him awake and working.
Chocolate is a reward item that occasionally drops from Zombies in the other
game modes. Once fed chocolate, Stinky will work for about an hour, collecting
coins from your happy plants. Chocolate can also be fed to happy plants to
make them more productive. You can save up to ten pieces of chocolate from
other levels, so make the most of your time by feeding nine of them to plants!

Check the FAQs first next time. The only things I would add:
-You can get plants other than Marigolds from playing normally (although Survival gives you a much better drop rate). These sell for 8K, or 10K for Night/Aquatic, when full-grown.
-You can't quit the game, or even leave your garden, while Stinky is at work.

I read the FAQ. I just had some specific questions that I felt the FAQ did not answer.

Well it answered most of them. =/

Um what exactly is a happy plant? Do you just play music/spray bug spray and a plant becomes happy and keeps on making money, or is a happy plant a specific kind of plant?

Uh, no, that WAS a question. -.- What are you talking about...

Anyway, so I spray bug spray and play music and that makes Marigolds happy? Do the Marigolds have to be full grown?

They will be almost full-grown. Then the plant will ask for the bug spray or the phonograph, just like it asks for water or fertilizer. If you use those items on the plant when it's not wanting something, nothing will happen except your wasting money on bug spray or fertilizer.

As you keep playing the game, you will continue to earn new plants in every mode: adventure, mini-games, survival, and even the puzzle levels.. All of a sudden you'll kill a zombie and a little present will pop up instead of nothing, money, or chocolate. You'll get a sprout and it will be in your garden, and after a few hours it will also be almost full-grown after you've watered and fertilized it of course. You will have to make it happy too. You can get all the plants except the upgrade ones, so you will be able to find mushrooms and aquatic plants eventually too. When you are low and money you can sell a full-grown plant at full price: $3k for marigolds, $8k for every other kind of day-plant (cactus, wall-nut, etc.), $10k for a mushroom, and $10k for aquatic plants. For the mushrooms and aquatic plants to grow you'll have to eventually also purchase their separate gardens.

Oh alright, so bug spray/music only when the plants ask for it. Thanks.
