YCS/186 The Only Gauss That Makes You Bleed More.

So I decided to play through as a Energy specialist. Saved up every single SEC, MFC, ECP I could until I hit level 6 with 70 science for vigilant recycler. By this time I had also amassed around 7 fission batteries. Why would I do that? Because Fission batteries can be used with 5 drained SECs to create 30 SECs. Pretty nifty I think. By the time I had the YCS/186 I had around 1500 MFCs and 500 Max Charge MFCs which basically funtion are AP rounds. Later on I cleaned out Quarry Junction in less than 2 minutes with it. Every deathclaw only takes one hit with Max Charge cells (sneak crits). Even very hard mode. Hell, I even OHKO'd the Legate with a little help from my little buddy Psyco. I just don't understand why people rag on Energy Weapons so much. With a little love and extra care, even a scoped laser rifle makes quick work of deathclaws.

My only issue with the YCS is that it never seems to work properly in VATS. Outside of VATS it'll blow pretty much anything away in 1-2 shots, but when I go to VATS mode the same things I was blowing away without VATS seems to take half the damage they did before.

And in the middle of this post, I just confirmed from the wiki that this is a bug that affects all gauss rifles in FO3 and NV. Bummer.

Energy Weapons get a bad reputation because they are expensive early on, and used to be harder to find and repair in Fallout 3. Now the only problem is that all those goo and ash piles left over from their fantastic critical hit rates can break your saves. Gauss weapons don't leave those do they? So I guess you found the best possible way to use energy weapons. Congratulations!

While this is all true, I'd say the main reason why they tend to be less viewed as the better set of weapons in New Vegas is because of:
1) More variety and choice in the Guns category.
2) Early in the games history most enemies had double their current DT, which made energy weapons considerably weaker. This has (thankfully) been fixed.

The thing I like about Energy weapons in the first place is that you can pretty much make your own AP ammo. Max charge ammo is extremely useful. The YCS is also very accurate. I never have to enter VATs because hip firing never suffers from movement. The Holo Rifle is the only other Energy weapon that can rival the YCS in damage. This is only because the HR uses only 1 MFC per shot. I just hate it's spread, and the fact that the spread upgrade code never spawned for me.
