Rome: Consultant for Hire. (Re Opened)

Ive read Rome since the beginning, it's what made me join this board. I even followed you to fanfiction.com. It's cool to see a strong woman with her own ways instead of the cardboard cutouts and stereotypes shoved onto us by popular culture. That's what I'll miss about her the most. Very well done average. You said you don't know what's next but I'm sure it will be good. Thank you for Rome and her story.

Hold on guys, we're not done here yet! :D I was trying to say that was a conclusion to Jake's series of contracts. There's definitely CoS business that needs to be done as well.

But thank you, a lot, (like a lot lot), for all of the kind feedback! It means the world. Thanks for reading as always!

And the troll rose up to threaten all, but homsarrunner3 stepped forth and smote him with superior intelligence, and there was much rejoicing.

I know I've still got Liquid's Elijah contract, but sometimes it's better to do what you're in the mood for. Well, at least I hope this turned out well.

The New Vegas Strip, 23rd April, 2275:

The sights filled Rome’s eyes to the brim as she gawked in every direction, this place was magical; she couldn’t believe she was actually here. But, ‘Mr. Strike’, as he referred to himself, had whipped out that piece of plastic from his suit like it was nothing, waved it in that bigass robot’s face, and they were in. Rome had read about Vegas, dreamed of being there, and here she was. It was beautiful.

Even just walking around Rome noticed how people dressed differently, acted differently, than she had ever seen before. And it was more than just the alcohol, men and women in formal wear strolled the torn blacktop, cigarettes held jauntily between their fingers and hats tipping lazily off their scalps. Nearly naked women danced seductively outside an enormous casino with a silhouetted figure sitting seductively in front of a fire, sweating in the heat as they moved, flowing like water swirling around and around. Rome’s eyes dragged across them for far longer than was polite, but she didn’t care.

“Rome.” Strike’s deep voice rattled loose Vegas’s grip on her senses, she turned away from the show girls and skittered back over to him like a lost dog, “Sorry, just taking in the view.” Now side by side again, they began their very own cruise of the road, “Don’t worry about it. Hell, you keep up doing what I saw you do earlier and you’ll own this ****ing town soon, I’ll tell you that.” Rome thought about that as they walked. “Where are we going?” She asked in that lost manner, still in a bit of shock.

Mr. Strike stopped, and so did Rome. He turned and looked at her for a little while, then pushed some of her hair away from her forehead and said, “You’re a hell of a gem, you know that?” Rome smiled nervously, but pushed his hand away, although gently, “Where?” Their feet resumed their quest along The Strip, “Dinner. New place, just opened up last week. Supposed to be the best damn food you can get. Called the Gourmand, or something.”

-

“I’ll be back in a moment with your drinks, Sir and Madame,” The fellow in the off putting mask strode away quickly, judging by the packed tables he must have been pretty busy. Strike whipped out his pack of NCR ‘Bear’ brand cigarettes, tilted it, and then hit a cigarette out of it. Seeing Rome’s interest he said, “Want one?” and flipped the smoke around. Rome eyed it like a kid watching an adult do something important for a moment, then grabbed it and stuck it in her mouth. Strike pulled out his lighter and lit it in one deft motion. “Blow out, then suck in,” he said. Rome did as instructed; watching the puff of smoke as she exhaled, then she took a large drag on it. Her head got dizzy, her hand and knees wobbled a bit, and she just about coughed a lung out before handing it back to Strike.

He laughed at Rome’s virgin lungs’ reaction to burning tobacco, “Reminds me of my first cigarette,” but he stopped there. Strike didn’t discuss his first name, let alone his past. The waiter came back, “One Old Fashioned,” he placed the cocktail by Strike, “And a Nuka Cola with a glass of ice for the lovely lady.” The waiter popped open the glass bottle, then set down a glass and poured it for her. Once he’d left, Strike ashed their cigarette and donned a serious expression. “So obviously, Rome, I didn’t bring you out here just for the experience of having a nice dinner with a pretty lady. You’ve got talent, you know that? The way you took down those thugs, hell I thought I was watchin’ some Old World cowboy vid or something.”

Mr. Strike became more and more animated as he drank his interesting looking drink, and delved further into his speech, moving his arms and taking punctual drags off his cigarette. “Now I don’t know where you learned to shoot, stab, hit, kick, what have you, like that, but I need people; people like you, to work for me. And I’m offering a lot of pay baby. If you’re impressed by this,” he waved his cigarette hand about the room, “this is nothing compared to what’s on its way. The best is yet to come, trust me.” Rome pictured what the greatest suite in this hotel looked like, and then her lying in its bed with one of those girls from outside that other casino.

Rome sipped her glass of soda, Strike continued, “I give you a couple guys or girls names, their locations, and then,” he made a finger gun with his free hand, “Bam bam bam, and you’re rich. And let’s be honest, you’re a block of marble ripe for the carving, here. You can shoot some thugs sure, but I know folks who can train you to make a squad of Baja Rangers,” short of breath, he inhaled sharply and continued in an even louder tone of voice, “Look like a bunch of kittens okay?!” This attracted some odd looks from those seated next to them.

He extended his hand across the table. Rome thought about this whole deal for a moment, there was no way she’d pass up a chance like this. No more poverty, no more boredom, anything she’d ever wanted was a handshake away. Rome met his hand halfway across the table and shook it firmly.
