It's only free in the next 48 hours so get it while it's hot.

Unfortunately, I don't even trust my laptop to run a 15-year-old game at this point.

Thankfully, I have the 'Fallout Trilogy'. I would like to say though, that this is one of those games where if you take away all the nostalgia, is pretty much inferior in every way compared to the modern remakes or sequels.

Yeah I got the Trilogy pack, though BoS didn't work, oh well I mainly got it for 1&2.

Don't even expect to play it unless you fix some things to make it playable and enjoyable.

One being a tweak to the world map movement that slows it down. Played on computers these days, the travel goes so fast, it's basically instant from 1 point to the other, and you have no random events/fights on the world map at all. The tweak slows it down, making it like it was on old, slower computers.

The other being a color fix. On a lot of newer video cards, a lot of the things in this game display as psychadelic pixelized messes.

The 2nd problem sounds like it would be easy to fix, but just try...

I know there was a few fixes but they were complex and only partially effective, hardly convenient or utility.

This is a case where older computers reign supreme. My 2003 laptop plays it near perfectly whereas my (atleast as of a year ago) fully updated, capable of playing Skyrim desktop is horrible with it.

Yeah, F1 may be inferior to F3 & FNV, but have you played F2? Unless youre going by a purely graphics whore POV, F2 = Best Fallout Ever.

I actually don't have either problem, and have installed no fixes. Sounds more like an issue with your OS (first issue), and one with your vid card (second issue). Try running in compatability mode.

I do get the "black screen" thing still though. The one where you have to switch to the settings menu or run your mouse over stuff to "unveil it" again.

I just googled "What is so great about Fallout 2" and I found this:

Aside from the setting and the large amount of content, I think one of the main reasons I love it is because of the sheer amount of freedom the game offers.

For example, what other game allows you to become a drug-addicted pornstar, a too-stupid-to-talk boxing childkiller, a chainsaw-wielding slaver, and a Scientologist all at the same time?

Hell, I still ocassionally boot up the game and create some new, totally eccentric character, doing things slightly differently each time. It's one of the most replayable RPGs ever, imo.

I'm sold.
