New to the Fallout games, getting my butt kicked

#1blackfire134Posted 4/28/2012 2:16:16 PM
I'm trying to get through the Bison Steve hotel, but the convicts are kicking my butt. My Varmint Rifle is doing pretty much nothing to the convicts, so I end up using a pool cue to bash em to death. I spent all my caps on stimpacks, but I use them way to quickly and now I'm broke. I can't find any beds to sleep in because they're all owned. I took down a few convicts, but the leader is taking barely any damage.

Like the title says, I'm new to these games so I don't really know what I'm doing. Any tips to get me through this section and the rest of the game?

well the varmit rifle is pretty junk.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Varmint_rifle

18 damage

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/9mm_pistol_%28Fallout%3A_New_Vegas%29

16 damage

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/9mm_submachine_gun_%28Fallout:_New_Vegas%29

14 damage.

now the 9mm pistol does slightly less damage per shot (especially at low gun skills) so its higher rate of fire works alot better. and since the SMG exists its generally easier to get ammo for it.

there is a 9mm SMG you can pick up with repair of 25 from the doctor's place in goodsprings. not really useful, as a gun IMO but its free.

are you using 'true ironsights' or some garbage? yeah its hard to guess where your bullets are going, turn that option off, thats probably your issue, then stick rounds in their heads, probably using a 9mm pistol.

course if you have GRA DLC I generally use a laser pistol for the starting area since GRA has +3 damage mod

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Laser_pistol_%28GRA%29

so it packs 15 (-2 DT) damage and a massive clip

By this time I was using a lot of dynamite in VATS. Still hard but manageable...

Once you get a few mods on it, the VR's a decent early-game long-range rifle. I still prefer to rush over to the Ratslayer, though.

Yeah you should always try to pick up the 9mm submachine from the doctors house at the beginning.
The first decent weapon you can get is the Ratslayer in the Broc Flower cave, it's a incredible gun that can pretty much carry you through the entire game.
But of course it also greatly depends on how you want to play the game, if you're not into sniper rifles that it's useless to you.

But if you can't defeat the enemies in that place, that's okay, go somewhere else and come back later with better equipment, it's not like you will miss something.

naw, lucky is a first decent weapon, as is a standard laser rifle.

the 9mm pistol is just a gun with a good ammo supply, decent clip, and scope.

i'm confused why the tc would be having trouble unless he's running on very hard with mods to increase difficulty, and even then.

There's always That Gun. It's much easier to get for a low level character than the ratslayer.

I don't remember that location. Is that part of a downloaded pack?
