^ They're all just mascots. Pikachu was suppose to appeal to both boys and girls while the manga centered Poliwhirl was suppose to appeal to boys, the main readers of manga.

if im not mistaken, Shigeru Miyamoto is the creator of mario(i dont kno) and helped the tajiri in making the first two games.

That might make sense if the games weren't the original thing. They chose Pikachu for the anime because it was popular, and Red got Poliwhirl because it's Tajiri's favourite pokemon.

IIRC they considered trying to push Clefairy as the "face" of Pokemon in the anime, but ended up going for Pikachu. Probably smart considering how North America is afraid of the color pink.

It was down to Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff, with Clefairy being in the lead in the poll or whatever. I think Pikachu either came back and ended up winning, or the creators just chose Pikachu because they liked it best out of the 3. Don't think we'll ever know the exact details.

funny thing is that red in the game doesnt even have poliwhirl.
