This is my first Pokemon game, I just beat the first gym. Is there a way for me to get a fire type pokemon at this point? I picked Totodile as my starter and am playing Heart Gold.

In the original Pokemon gold and silver, you'd be out of luck, but there is a character in the violet city Pokemon center who hands out three eggs if you tell him three passwords respectively. The three are a Wooper, a mareep, and to show I am not just randomly spouting facts, a Slugma. That being said, I think the next soonest is Magmar around the same time you get your fourth badge. There is a password generator on this site that will tell you what you need to say to get Slugma.

I highly recommend you get rid of your Slugma for a Growlithe or Magmar when they're available (you can get both before you take on Morty).

Slugma loses steam FAST and evolves at lvl 38. That's a long time to be dealing with just a Slugma, as good as it is early on.
