They just wanted a reason to seem like your's/opponent's Pokemon isn't blind.

I think avoiding means the attack missed due to an evasion boost, whereas a loss in accuracy/missing an inaccurate move means missing.

Could be wrong.
If you're agnostic and 29% sure of it, post it in this signature.

Isn't it to do with your accuracy and their evasion?

Your acc fails = miss
Your acc succeeds, their evasion also succeeds = avoided?

"Avoided the attack" means the evasiveness of the enemy pokémon is high. "Missed" means your pokémon's accuracy is low.

One is based on accuracy and the other on evasiveness?

"Avoided the attack" is when the move targets more than one Pokemon. "Missed" is when it targets just one Pokemon.

"Avoided the attack" is when the move targets more than one Pokemon. "Missed" is when it targets just one Pokemon.

This is correct. It has nothing to do with accuracy or evasiveness.

If the move that was used targets more than one Pokemon in 2v2 battles, it will say "(Target) avoided the attack!". If it only targets one Pokemon in 2v2, it will say "(User)'s attack missed!". This happens even in 1v1 battles now, for some reason.
