How is it done? In Platinum, one of my favorite things to pass time was to go on a shiny hunt for some random pokemon and try my luck at chaining them, maybe happily walking away sometime later with a shiny or two in my sack. That was pretty cool.
Now I've seen no mention of a pokéradar of any sort for HG/SS or anything like it.. so, what options do we have? I just recently got HG as a present and I'm not far into the game, but it's worrying me a bit...

Run around in grass and caves or swim in water, and pray. --- You forget, fool! This Purugly flies!

Do it without tools, old school like GSC/RSE. --- ...?!

Do the rosary 3x, get 16 rabbit feet and 5 four leaf clovers, then go hunting for pokemon --- If you take a Blaziken, teach it kung fu, karate, tae kwon do, and other martial arts, then you will have the WORLD'S MOST UNSTOPPABLE FIGHTING TYPE!!!

Haha yeah, I know you can just go and hope to be lucky.. but I don't get why they'd remove the way it was in the last games. It made sense, too. Soft-resetting is something only 1 in 10000 can endure for more than half an hour and being lucky is.. just that. Does anyone know if they upped the chances of finding shinies in general then at least?

It's still the same 1/8192 rate, but I've found two shinies in SS so far. I'm just lucky, I suppose.
I guess they figured that the PokeRadar made finding shines - which are supposed to be rare - too easy. And the probably got pissed about RNG manipulating.

Hm well, thanks. Not sure what I'll do then. With such an encounter rate it's pretty demotivating to go out on a hunt with the mind set on finding a shiny :X
