Galaxy 2 Coinless Challenge List+Details (No Death Trick)

#1bachuressPosted 2/27/2011 9:25:17 PM
If you felt like SMG1 was a good challenge coinless, welcome to the world of SMG2, a.k.a Coinless Hell. This list assumes you are going to be playing the game without utilizing the death trick. For me, coinless means absolutely coinless. In other words, if you pick up a coin, you must restart the level from the beginning. The death trick is a cheap way to get zero coins, and isn't a challenge at all if you don't have to worry about picking up coins until the last checkpoint.

Obviously, Coin Lumas are impossible to complete due to the lack of coins you will be collecting. The only unfortunate thing about this run is you actually have to utilize the death trick in Spin Dig Galaxy, or else you won't be able to continue the game at all. A few stars are also only possible with a second player to hold coins that would get in your way, and one of these is in a level that you must complete to progress further. But testing was always done to make sure that the second player is only used when completely necessary.

Obviously, since only regular gold coins add to your overall total, purple coin collections are just fine.

Rules for the Challenge:

1. You cannot pass a checkpoint with a coin.

2. If you collect a perfectly avoidable coin, you must leave and restart the level.

3. Second player is allowed to play with you to hold one coin that you cannot avoid. (Such as in Yoshi Star Galaxy where a launch star spits you into a coin--2nd player can hold it through the rest of the level.)

4. If you die with the second player holding a coin, the 2nd player is not allowed to pick up any more coins. They must act as if they are still holding the coin. Starbits may be collected, but nothing involving the A button can be done (collecting 1-ups, stunning enemies, etc).

Coin Lumas are off-limits as of now, we might make a separate list for them later on.

There are 94 stars that we have figured out. More are theoretically possible, but need testing.

Here is a quick list of what we've found. Following this is details on every star as well as tips and tricks for tricky stars.

WORLD 1
--------------

Sky Station (3/3)

-Peewee Piranha's Temper Tantrum
- Standard stuff. No tricky coins to get in your way.

-Storming the Sky Fleet
- More standard stuff.

-Peewee Piranha's Speed Run
- Speedrun comet (Peewee Piranha), and even more standard stuff

--------------

Yoshi Star (3/3, 2/3 if playing alone)

-Saddle Up With Yoshi
- Standard.

-Spiny Control
- There is a part near the end where a sling star pulls you into an unvoidable coin, but a second player can hold onto this coin so you don't grab it. It must be held throughout the whole boss fight.

-Spiny Rainbow Romp
- Enemy comet is obnoxious, but the coins aren't tough to dodge.

--------------

Spin Dig (3/3)

-Digga-Leg's Planet
- The first star forces you to pick up six coins from a sling star's pullback. However, you need to get this star to progress through the game, so the death trick is mandatory. Boss is difficult to do coinless due to the small drills it spawns.

-Silver Stars Down Deep
- Be careful to not dig into the wrong places on the square-shaped silver star planet. Practice is encouraged.

-Digga-Leg's Dardevil Run
- Daredevil Comet run of Dig-Leg is actually easier than the normal one, due to the enemies not dropping coins.

--------------

Fluffy Bluff (2/3)

-Search for the Toad Brigade Captain
- Be sure to keep the Cloud flower and at least two clouds (preferably three) on the small watery planet with the cosmic clones, because getting the comet medal otherwise is very difficult. The rest is normal.

-Every Planet Has Its Price
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

-The Chimp's Stomp Challenge
- Chimp Challenge (10,000 points) is hard to achieve with no coins to add to your total, but can be done. Just rack up a long combo from enemy bouncing, and be sure to grab the 1-Up and Life Shroom for extra points.

--------------

Flip-Swap (2/2)

-Think Before You Shake
- Standard stuff.

-Purple Coin Flip 'n' Sprint
- Purple coin comet contains very few gold coins, and they're easy to dodge.

--------------

Rightside Down (2/2)

-Breaking The Laws of Gravity

This one is for sure possible, but we have only been able to get through this with the death trick. Every section is possible, and we have done it, but it's hella hard in one go.

We have only made the first jump past the first three coins once. Luigi is the best choice for this level, and there's another flower that needs a triple-jump to get past and get into the field of gravity, or else it spits you into coins. The rest of the level is hell to navigate, but doable.

Every part HAS been done coinless, but not all at once, as stated above.

-The Great Crate Incinerator
- Using Luigi, you can do a specific wall jump past the first set of three coins. It's very picky, and not reliable, but it is possible to get past them without the flower. From there you can easily get into the pipe leading to the secret star. Having a second player hold the second (maybe third would help too) coin in the line the flower throws you into makes the jump a lot more tolerable, but it is possible do do alone.

--------------

Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla (2/2)

-Gobblegut's Aching Belly
- Only thing hard is surviving the boss and not running into coins it releases.

-Fiery Flotilla Speed Run
-Just the boss, and the same thing. Just avoid the coins that can break out of crystals.

WORLD 2
--------------

Puzzle Plank (2/3)

-The Puzzling Picture Block
- Standard stuff.

-Bugaboom's Back
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

-Purple Coin Shadow Vault
- Purple coin comet has an incredibly lazy level design and is simple. No actual coins, so no added difficulty. SO MANY STARBITS at the end because of the cosmic clones.

--------------

Hightail Falls (2/3)

-Hot-Stepping Dash Pepper
- First star is tricky to avoid coins. Scout ahead in first person to get an idea. At the start, the harder route is the best route to avoid coins.

-Silver Stars in Hightail Falls
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

-Hightail Falls Speed Run
- Speedrun Comet doesn't add coins, but has raining boulders from the sky. More difficult, but no added coins.

--------------

Boulder Bowl (3/3)

-Rock and Rollodillo
- First star is standard until boss--coins are just laying around and avoiding them can be a bit tricky with the boulder controls, but is perfectly possible.

-Rolling Crabber Romp
- Enemy comet only has two coins (in plants), so not much added difficulty. It's still incredibly lame though.

-C'mere, Goomba
- Irritating star because sometimes the Goombas have a death wish and run straight into the rolling chomps, but with a second player to get rid of those, it's a lot easier.

--------------

Cosmic Cove (1/3)

-Twin Falls Hideaway
- Easy stuff

-Exploring the Cosmic Cavern
- Not possible due to a wall jump and two coins that are placed in your path.

-Catch That Star Bunny
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

--------------

Wild Glide (2/2)

-Fluzzard's First Flight
- Standard flying. A few coins in bubbles, but nothing terrible to dodge.
-Jungle Fluzzard Race
- No different from a normal run, no coins in the level that are in your way.

--------------

Honeybloom (2/2)

-Bumble Beginnings
- First star (worst thing ever). So many coins littered around, it's a HUGE minefield of avoiding spiky plants who try and kill you. For even more challenge, see how far you can go without the bee suit.

-The Secret Wall Jump
- Secret star is tricky with one player, easy with two. With two players, just have them hold the first coin and swing up normally. Alone, you can just barely backflip and wall jump off the left wall.

--------------

Bowser's Lava Lair (2/2)

-Bowser's Big Lava Power Party
- Not very many hard parts, just the fight with Bowser throwing coins at you. Standard stuff. For the part with the springboard with a coin above it. If you do a simple sideflip/spin jump, you can avoid it by having the gravity of the other part suck you up.

-Lava Lair Speed Run
-Collect the clocks and run like crazy. Time is tight, but coins don't pose a threat.

WORLD 3
--------------

Tall Trunk (3/3)

-The Flotacious Blimp Fruit
- First star has a tricky bit at the end, but nothing unmanageable. Careful balloon Yoshi maneuvering is the key.

-Tall Trunk's Big Slide
- Second star is the slide...with SO many coins to avoid. Best way to do this is to stay to the sides as much as possible and no 2nd player so you can see better.

-Tall Trunk's Purple Coin Slide
- Purple Coin Comet is difficult as usual, but has no gold coins to collect, so it's nothing different from a normal run.

--------------

Cloudy Court (2/3)

-Head in the Clouds
- Lots of coins near the end, but no special tricks needed.

-The Shadow Lining
- Cosmic comet has almost no coins (4 that are easily avoidable). Easy mission.

-Silver Stars in the Purple Pond
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

--------------

Haunty Halls (3/3)

-A Glimmer of Bulb Berry
- Level is annoying, but it always is to some extent. Nothing terrible.

-Sneaking Down the Creepy Corridor
- Very stressful on the moving platform parts, but it's quite possible.

-Spooky Cosmic Clone Chase
- Slightly more obnoxious due to the clones, but nothing hair-pulling.

--------------

Freezy Flake (3/3)

-Bowser on Ice
- Nothing tricky, basic coin avoiding.

-Sorbetti's Chilly Reception
- Avoid coins spewing out of the snow statues. Be careful of the foggy parts, coins tend to pop out of nowhere.

-The Chimp's Skating Challenge
- No coins get in your way.

--------------

Rolling Masterpiece (1/2)

-Silver Chomp Grudge Match
- Dodging the Goombas on the elevator and the line of coins right before the clear plastic ruler at the end are pretty hard, but still possible. They're made much easier with a second player.

-Masterpiece Speed Run
- Impossible, because a ball launcher drops you directly on a coin. Even with a second player to grab the coin, it still doesn't seem to be possible to grab the coin in time.

--------------

Beat Block (2/2)

-Step to the Beep
- The only coins are from enemies or crystals, so they don't really get in your way at all.

-Silver Stars in Double Time
- Little to no coins will get in your way, just like with the regular mission.

--------------

Bowser Jr's Fearsome Fleet (2/2)

-Bowser Jr's Mighty Megahammer
- Normal run through it, no added difficulty in avoiding coins. Except maybe the boss fight, but treat it as a daredevil run.

-Megahammer's Daredevil Bash
-By definition is possible. Lack of coins latching onto you makes it easier.

WORLD 4
--------------

Supermassive Galaxy (3/3)

-Huge Trouble with Big Wigglers
- Beware of the giant Koopas that drop coins. Just be careful or dig through to the other side to avoid them. Drill as close as you can to the Koopa in front of you, and the coin should drop behind you. The comet medal for this world is a bit tricky, as it is in a line of coins, but a careful spin jump from the side will collect it easily enough.

-Big Wigglers Speed Run
-Standard speedrun, a few shortcuts here and there you can take, but no coins to slow you down.

-In Full Bloom
- Take the advice from the previous star, and then just be very slow and careful on the flower planet, as coins will often spew out.

---

Flipsville Galaxy (3/3, 2/3 if playing alone)

-Flip-Flopping in Flipsville
-Fun level to mess with. Surprisingly breakable considering the invisible barriers scattered all around in this game. Coins kinda get in your way after the halfway point, but they're not too bad.

-Flipsville's New Digs
-Avoid big question mark coin towards the end of the level with the silver stars. There is also a Silver star encased in coins, which requires a second player to hold the bottom coin so you can double-jump into the star. Without a second player, this one is impossible.

-Purple Coin Spin Speed Run
-Easy.

---

Starshine Beach Galaxy (3/3)

-Surf, Sand, and Silver Stars
-Beware the red flowers the star appears above. They produce coins, and will screw you over if you're not prepared. Other than that, the level is mostly easy but time-consuming. And Yoshi's aiming has a bit to be desired.

-Climbing the Cloudy Tower
-Just don't be a moron and collect a coin underwater or on the island near the lilypads or something, and you'll be fine.

-Purple Coin Beach Dash
-No normal coins in sight, just purples. So there's no additional challenge.

WORLD 4 CONT
------

Chompworks Galaxy (1/3)

-Where the Chomps Are Made of Gold
-This is still the best level ever. A couple parts put coins in your way but they're not that hard to dodge.

-Spring into the Chompworks
-Level testing needed, this is theoretically possible, but the two coins at the end of the level on the rotating screw things pose a potential problem. It's doable to get up to the top of the tower at the end without the spring mushroom, as well as duck under the second to last coin and do a very specific sideflip and then walljump off the last screw. Whether or not this is possible in practice is our question, as we tried for a good two hours, but we don't quite have the skills necessary to pull it off. We think it's possible, but unsure.

---

Sweet Mystery Galaxy (2/2)

-Bulb Berry's Mysterious Glow
- Somewhat tricky jumps, but mainly just don't be careless.

-Bulb Berry's Purple Coin Glow
- Significantly easier than the normal mission, as there are no regular coins to get in your way, and the tricky bit at the end is gone completely.

---

HoneyHop Galaxy (2/2)

-The Sweetest Silver Stars
-Normal as can be. Just be careful when climbing the honey walls, and you should be good.

-The Chimp's Score Challenge
-This one is just barely doable, but if you do your combos right, and long-jump through the ? coin, you should make it. When I did this, my score was only 60 points above the requirement, and those 60 were from star bits. It's best to kill the lone enemies with a spin so you can get those extra points just in case it comes very close at the end. But you're only allowed to mess up around two combos if you hope to get 10k.

----

Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet (2/2)

-Breaking into Bowser's Castle
-A number of tricky parts, but nothing with a technique you can't figure out. Just remember your gravity rules of this game, and beware of coins that come out of boulders in the Bower fight.

Gravity Star Speed Run
-No trick to it, but it is hard. You must avoid the coins and be fast, while also taking efforts to not die from lava, fireballs, or any of the other stuff the level throws at you. Practice and learning the level well are the best ways to handle it.

WORLD 5
--------------

Space Storm Galaxy (3/3)

-Follow me, Bob-omb
-The beginning has a few coins you must slip past carefully, and the end has a bunch in a pull star area while you also need to dodge electric orbs and barriers. It's tough, but possible.

-To the Top of Topman's Tower
-Not a hard level, and not many coins to get in your way.

-C'mere, Topman
-Exactly the same as "Follow me, Bob-omb". Just get lucky with the enemy following you, and avoid long-jumping over some pits of doom where coins are.

----

Slipsand Galaxy (3/3 theoretically. 0/3 tested)

-Squizzard's Sandy Sinkhole
- The sand slide has a long line of coins at the end, right before a checkpoint. It seems to be possible to do coinless, but just barely. This level needs testing, but is theoretically possible.
It's also possible that a second player could grab one of the coins (the last one would probably be most helpful) or the checkpoint flag to make it slightly easier. We haven't actually managed this one without the death trick yet, but it's theoretically possible. Boss fight is somewhat coin-heavy, but compared to the slide it's not worth worrying about.

LEVEL TESTING NEEDED TO CONFIRM IF POSSIBLE OR NOT.

-Sailing the Sandy Seas
- Doable but hard. In the beginning, you go into a pipe. You can go right immediately without having to change the shift of gravity. The orange pipe you can figit into, and isn't very hard to do. This avoids the line of coins to the left when you enter the pipe.

-Squizzard's Daredevil Run
- Usual Daredevil boss stuffs. There's no coins, so ... yeah.

----

Shiverburn Galaxy (3/3)

-Prince Pikante's Peppery Mood
-Normal as usual. Nothing frustrating.

-Octo Army Icy Rainbow Romp
-No coins in your path. Or at all.

-The Chimp's Ultimate Skating Challenge
-Normal as usual.

----

Boo Moon Galaxy (3/3)

-Silver Stars Pop-Up
- No trouble except the couple coins on the snake block thing.

-Haunting the Howling Tower
- The Boo Mario section is tense, but surprisingly not that bad. There's just one or two spots where a coin kinda blocks a hallway, but you can always avoid them with careful movement.

-The Star in the Sinking Swamp
-Same as the other star (first one), with the added bit at the end, but no added coins.

----

Upside Dizzy Galaxy (0/2)

-A Walk on the Weird Side
-From the start, there is a line of coins between two gravity fields that slings you into the coins. Sliding down the walls doesn't produce a way around them, because when the gravity changes, Mario switches and collects coins.

-Burning Upside Dizzy
-Not able to enter for second star.

----

Fleet Glide Galaxy (2/2)

-Fluzzard's Wild Battlefield Glide
-Getting the comet medal is a pain, but not because of coins. Normal stuff.

-Fastest Feathers in the Galaxy
- You pretty much have to actively seek out coins to get any here, so no worries.

----

Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker (2/2, 1/2 if playing alone... sort of)

-Bowser Jr.'s Boomsday Machine
- Here's the thing. You need to beat this level to progress to World 6, but there is no way to do it coinless unless you have a second player to hold the coin on the stack of smashable rice cake things leading to the boss. And there's no checkpoint after that, so you can't use the death trick. So your options are to have a second player (or use a second controller and then hold it with your foot or a clamp or something), or to get the one coin and deal with it being part of your score.

-Boomsday Machine Daredevil Run
-No coins in daredevil runs, so just survive and you're good.

WORLD 6
---------------

Melty Monster Galaxy (3/3)

-The Magnificent Magma Sea
-Pull stars have some coins but are easy to dodge. There's a swing towards the end that has a coin on an upswing. Start by getting as close to the coin as you can, then swing the other way, jump and spin quickly and continue shaking the wiimote and hope you're close enough for the launch star to shoot you.

-A Stroll Down Rolling Lane
-A few coins at the beginning on the bridge, and a few more later on in the course. Just stay to the edges, and they are avoidable.

-The Chimp's Bowling Challenge
-There are precisely 300 coins--no not really, there are 0.

----------------

Clockwork Ruins Galaxy (2/3)

-Time for Adventure
- The first part of the level can be mostly skipped by just going across the tops of the rotating things. The next part, after the series of giant rolling discs, has some coins floating around the poles. You can skip these easily enough by just walljumping to a high pole and going from there. After that, you can skip a portion of spinning things with coins in them by just doing a triple jump + spin + walljump + second spin, to land up by where the pipe is. You don't really have to do this, but it helps.

-The Adventure of the Purple Coins
- Guess how many coins there are here? If you said 100, you'd be right. But they're all purple.

-The Ledge Hammer Trap
-Coin Luma and thus is impossible.

-------------

Throwback Galaxy (3/3)

-Return of the Whomp King
- This level has a rather huge amount of coins in it (probably because the original N64 level did), but none get in your way closely enough to be a problem. The worst is in the hole leading to the real boss, and you can avoid it by just dropping in a corner.

-Silver Stars in the Whomp Fortress
-Not very hard, less coins in this mission than the first.

-Whomp Silver Star Speed Run
-Pretty normal with no tricky jumps.

------------

Battle Belt Galaxy (2/3)

-Mini-Planet Mega-Run
- There's a good number of coins littered around throughout the level, so be careful not to run into them accidentally. The Boos in the water are the most likely to screw you over, just because of the way you fight them. It's best to get to a far corner and hit them as far away as possible.

-Mini-Planet Daredevil Run
-Daredevil, and thus easy. No coins to bother you.

-Snacktime for Gobblegut
- This mission has a coin Luma and is thus impossible.

------------

Flash Black Galaxy (2/2)

-Jumping Around in the Dark
-A few close calls with coins at the beginning part, and the launch star is safe, even if it appears not to be.

-Dark Octo-Army Romp
-Spinning the enemies instead of stomping makes coins less of a problem.

Slimy Spring Galaxy (2/2)

-The Deep Shell Well
-It's tough getting through this one with no coins, due to the oxygen problems. But both halves of it are possible. The first doesn't really have any special tricks, just don't bump into stuff, and don't get caught up on the brick wall before the eels. For the second part, it looks like you need to go through speed rings with coins in them, but if you wait a couple seconds, the wall will open up and you can proceed.

-The Chimp's Coin Challenge
-Hardest thing ever. No, really. It's just barely possible with a second player. And I mean BARELY. And don't even think about trying it without a second player, because there's no goddamn way. Here's what you need to do. And remember that throughout all of this, you need to avoid the dozens of coins in bubbles, and air is concerning.

* Get 8 star bits from the box at the beginning, as many as you can from the ring on the wall (7 is the best we've managed), and then break all the mines by shooting star bits at them and collecting the ones they drop. Try to put off diving until the last second, because air is more of a concern than the timer.

* Wriggle back and forth, aiming light at all the squiggly enemy things, and collect as many of the star bits as you can. Second player helps a lot here. Partway through the cave, you'll want to stay towards the left wall and throw your shell so P2 can grab the 1-up in the side cave. Then get another shell (P2 can maybe kill another enemy while you do this) and continue, doing the same thing.

* When you reach the thin area, hopefully your air isn't in the red yet, but it will be very soon. Throw the shell at an urchin for 300 points and some star bits, then continue swimming to grab another shell. Break through the brick wall (P2 speeds this up a bit) and kill an eel with the shell. There's three more squiggly things after this, and you're going to reach the Launch Star with no air left, but luckily you don't die immediately. You just take damage every couple seconds, and taking one hit here is acceptable, but try your best not to. Hopefully you have around 5600 points at this point, but a bit less might be tolerable. There's not much room for error though, so higher is obviously better.

* Long jump onto the Paragoomba and avoid the coin it drops (and the huge line of them going down), get the star bits in the arrow, and then wait. Sitting here is painful, but if you want to get through this without drowning, you have to wait until there's only 68 seconds left on the timer. If you've taken damage, go for 65 or so. This isn't exact, you might want to test exactly how long you can last.

* This next section consists of trying to shine light at as many Boos as possible and not grabbing the coins they drop. It's hard because they're usually out of your line of sight due to Mario getting in the way, so try not to stay still. You don't have to get every Boo, but not very many can be missed. Don't double back for ones you missed, it won't be worth it.

* Once all the Boos are dead, you'll have very little air left, about 15 seconds left on the timer, and hopefully around 9700 points. So you can throw your shell at an urchin and get the last 300 you need. There's enough time to hit a second enemy if you need that last boost, but the swimming controls are less than stellar and the camera fails spectacularly, so don't count on it.

* So by now, you've either gotten your 10,000 points or you haven't. If you did manage to get enough, you just have to hope that your timer runs out before your air does. If you waited to dive at the right time at the start of this section, you should be ok. This mission really isn't a precise science, you have to just get incredibly lucky. But it is possible, we've proven it.

Bowser's Galaxy Generator (2/2)

-Bowser's Fortified Fortress
-Straight forward. No tricky coins, just avoid the ones in the final fight, especially after the fakeout, coins may fly into you if you take damage.

-Bowser's Big Bad Speed Run
-Just beware of the line of coins in the pepper section with Yoshi. If you jump right before the clock, you should jump over the coins behind it. If you saved your time well, though, you can miss it completely.

At this point, the game is over if you refuse to have any coins on your file, because the first star in Rolling Coaster Galaxy has some that are completely unavoidable, even with the death trick or a second player, and you must complete the level to move on to later ones. If you wish to accept the minimum total for that level and move on, you can still get some more coinless stars from the next levels, but the file as a whole won't officially be coinless anymore.

---------

Rolling Coaster Galaxy (0/2 completely coinless, 1/2 coinless if you accept unavoidable ones)

-The Rainbow Road Toll
-Impossible to do completely coinless, an on-rails section requires you to pick up 5 coins, or 4 coins if a second player holds one.

-Purple Coins on the Rainbow Road
-It's...purple coins. No regulars to get in your way. Getting this star (and any beyond this point) implies you have already broken the coinless run and accepted a minimum for the first star in this world.

---------

Twisty Trials Galaxy (2/2)

-Spinning and Spinning and Spinning
-No coins.

-Turning Turning Double Time
-No coins to get in your way, just be fast.

---------

Stone Cyclone Galaxy (2/2)

-Silver Stars on the Cyclone
-A line of tricky coins with the spinning sections in the middle, but they are avoidable.

-Tox Box Speed Run
-No coins to get in your way.

---------

Boss Blitz Galaxy (2/2)

-Throwback Throwdown
-Easily avoidable coins, just watch out for the ones the bosses throw at you sometimes. Your bigger concern is taking too much damage, but the bosses aren't too hard if you know their patterns, and there's a checkpoint after the third.

-Throwback Throwdown Speed Run
-Same as the last, but with a timer and no checkpoint. So it's harder, but still not really difficult to avoid the coins.

---------

Flip-Out Galaxy (2/2)

-Wicked Wall Jumps
-Only one coin and easily avoidable.

-Cosmic Clone Wall Jumpers
-Only the one coin again.

---------

And there you go, the grand list of what is possible and not possible in Super Mario Galaxy 2. A few levels still need extensive testing (Chompworks Galaxy and Slipsand Galaxy), but we had fun testing what we could, and now we pass those two levels on to people who might have the skills to do it.

Slipsand Galaxy only needs testing on the first star. If it isn't possible, then the second stars cannot be entered and are thus taken off the possible coinless list.

Grandmaster Galaxy can't be unlocked coinless, because it's impossible to get every single star. If you want to try it on a non-coinless file, feel free, but we haven't unlocked it yet and haven't tested it.
