Got this when it was on sale a couple weeks ago. I forgot how good this game was! Remember when FPS's had a single player campaign that lasted longer than 5 hours? AND still had great multi-player? It's also kinda easy. Stumble into a roomful of enemies? No problem, just whip out your auto targeting Uzi of Death.

It was pretty clear when this game first came out that the N64 couldn't handle it. If this game had run at 60fps when it was originally released people would still be talking about it in hushed tones. You know, when EGM named this one of the most overrated games of all time I immediately dropped my subscription.

Wasn't EGM going crazy over it after it first came out too? It says they gave it a 9.83 out of 10 on GameRankings.

Here's the thing, the people at EGM who were gushing about the game were gone by the time that was written. They were replaced with far less talented writers and I saw it as a shot at their predecessors. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

Yeah, I remember. EGM made a huge deal about this. Back then... it was basically what N64 had going for it. And... over rated? I would totally agree, considering the rediculous amount of hype magazines like EGM gave it. (This was probably some of the main evidence the new writers had for it being overrated.) Except that aside from the N64 having little else going for it at that point in its life... they had good reason to rave about it!

Sure, it seems good now. But it wasn't just good back then. It was revolutionary in so many levels. It actually brought in bots, that were very intelligent, even by today's mulltiplayer bot standards. The AI could even be thoroughly modified! The game had this ridiculously amazing gun called the far sight.

Okay, I've only mentioned a few ancillary details about the game. Things that in terms of the game as a whole aren't really that big an emphasis. But back 10+ years ago... The game could have only introduced ONE of these ideas effectively (well maybe not even effectively) and it would astonish people.

So... was the game hyped to insane extent? Hell yeah. Did it deserve it? As much as any game could, given the era it was released in.
