What I really wanna know is, does it matter?
"The Knightmare of Nunnally" Code Geass manga is completely non-canon, but it's still absolutely amazing.
Does it really HAVE to be canon for it to be good?
No, ac!d was amazing (i felt) however this game i feel is bad. and would be less bad if it wasnt named metal gear. That doesnt exactly answer your question. (im just pissed i finished the game and im disappointed) So to answer your question something doesnt have to be cannon to be good. Play AC!D.

That makes no sense, and I hope you realize how silly you sound.

"HURR THEY RUINED METAL GEAR"

A lot of people like this game, and quite frankly, I think MGS4 did more "damage" to the series than this game did.

Absolutely not, but still it might betray certain peoples expectation if they order turkey, and are instead brought chicken with lots of spice.

Okay, can I just throw one thing out there?

Canon- material accepted as "official" in a fictional universe. Example: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Cannon- A cannon is any piece of artillery that uses gunpowder or other usually explosive-based propellants to launch a projectile.
Example:

I don't know why, but it annoys me when people call something "cannon" when it's not a big gun >_<

Of course, you don't have to listen to me. I'm just throwing it out there.

Eh I am still a little dubious about the credibility of the term canon at all. If the author can just completely subvert the rules of the series reality with a lack luster continuation IE star wars prequels, or sell the rights to another producer that changes series realties IE terminator 3 then what creditability does any Canon have? Any body of work unless it is clearly following the same formula, and characters shouldn't be considered canon even if the author says so. To this day I don't care what anybody says there is no Dune series out side of the four main books in the series, and anybody who says other wise is full of it even the 5th, and 6th books made Frank Herbert.

... You must be kidding.

Okay, if the author says something is canon, it is. You can not like it, but you can't say no. It's his work, he wrote it, he decides what is official and what isn't. It's not up to the readers, it's up to him.

The author has final say. No arguing, no ifs ands or buts. You don't have to like it, but you can't just decide what is and isn't canon.

For instance, if Hideo Kojima decided in the next game that Solid Snake was born a woman and had a sex change, guess what? He said so, so it's canon.

The fan never has say of what is canon. Sure, sometimes if fans dislike a decision, the author might decide to retcon it, but right now Rising is 100% canon.

Do people really think they can decide what's canon?

In certain instances...

One of the gameboy Castlevania games had a really messed up story, so it is officially retconed by Konami.

I mean, if fans really didn't like something, the author could just retcon it.

As crappy as they are the Star Wars Prequals, Indiana Jones 4, Tetminator 3 are all canon to their respective series. Something being canon doesn't mean it has to be good.

The disconnect in this topic is the misinterpretation of the word canon.

I know, I said the same thing. People can't decide if something is canon or not, but they can choose to hate the decision. If enough people hate it, the author will retcon it (in some cases).

In the end though, it's up to the author. For people who say that Kojima has to come out and say it, you do realize that he probably over saw the whole thing? He didn't write it, but I'm sure a he read through the plot and gave the okay. The writer can only call the game canon if Kojima says it's okay. Since the writer said the game was canon, chances are he got the go ahead from Kojima.

(edited)
Lucasfilm sold the Star Wars franchise to Disney and now Disney intends on creating a new trilogy in addition to spin off movies that take place in the Star Wars universe.

Is the new trilogy going to be canon even though Lucas is no longer in charge? Yes (whatever vision JJ Abrams has is now canon)

Are the spin offs going to be canon even though Lucas is no longer in charge? Yes (a hypothetical boba fett movie would technically be canon EVEN THOUGH IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SKYWALKER SAGA)

Did anakin revert back to his younger self as a ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi? Did that stupid musical number in Jabbas palace actually happen in the movies canon? YES (Even though these changes are stupid as hell)
