It's canon --- Build a man a fire and you'll warm him for a day. Set a man on fire and you'll warm him for the rest of his life. |

Do people really think they can decide what's canon? In certain instances...
One of the gameboy Castlevania games had a really messed up story, so it is officially retconed by Konami.
I mean, if fans really didn't like something, the author could just retcon it.
I know, I said the same thing. People can't decide if something is canon or not, but they can choose to hate the decision. If enough people hate it, the author will retcon it (in some cases).
In the end though, it's up to the author. For people who say that Kojima has to come out and say it, you do realize that he probably over saw the whole thing? He didn't write it, but I'm sure a he read through the plot and gave the okay. The writer can only call the game canon if Kojima says it's okay. Since the writer said the game was canon, chances are he got the go ahead from Kojima.
So does that make DmC canon lol? I think its pretty simple each story is an isolated occurrence a person can try to bastardize, and change it all they want afterwords, but the way that individual story was originally told at that time is all that matters. Not whoever created it, or owns the intellectual rights to it.

Yes, DmC is canon. Luckily it's an alternate universe, so it's not canon to DMC in any way. However, the DmC series is canon (and it's only 1 game).
And dude, the creator has final say. There is no arguing this. If Kojima says the game is canon (and he pretty much gave the go ahead for the team writing it to say it's canon), then it is. Actually how long I choose to participate in following the story is completely at my own discretion. I really don't subscribe to brand loyalty, and I especially don't care for retcons, and zombie franchises. My basic rule of thumb is once something starts to suck it doesn't exist as far as I am concerned. Luckily I don't consider this games story line bad, but a very well executed parody at the incredibly lame plot the fourth game had. |

Translations:
"So anyways, I can't prodive a single source where Kojima outright says the game is not "canon" using the specific word of canon, I'm going to pretend the old games doesn't break the fourth wall or parody itself, I'm going to make up on the spot the idea that parody = non-canon. And I know the word canon so well that I can't even spell canon right.
So yeah, the game is non-canon."
http://www.takuchat.com/does-kojima-not-care-for-metal-gear-rising/ Nice cherry picking that editor did instead of posting the full stories. "The toy thing isn't really relevant if you actually translate it yourself since twitters translator sucks. He just wanted to see how he would look on snakes body. The game is still his idea regardless. The game he envisioned though just couldn't be possible due to the experience of his staff thats why he let platinum do it. As I mentioned before, they've butt-headed each other which an employee stated in an interview but they've overcome that making kojima like the game. If he didn't like the game he would have cancelled it like the rising project to his team he thought he could do it. Like I mentioned before you'll deny this regardless of what others say. If he truly didn't care for the game he would have not added MGR to the 25th anniversary." From the same site. --- Want to watch a fat redneck do stupid crap? Unfortunately yes. DMC is canon. Which is a giant "Eff you!" to the people (Like myself) who actually played the first 4. It's like they're saying, "Hey, remember that awesome fight you did? Yeah, it never happened. Sorry 'bout that. Better luck next time." Well actually DmC was officially called by all parties involved, an "alternate universe" that uses a similar backstory. --- Want to watch a fat redneck do stupid crap?
