On December 12, Kojima tweeted, "We're only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At the present, we can't say more than this." you got twitter? Now please go on with your next excuse.
And not being part of MGS makes it not-canon?
I guess MG is not canon.
Oh, wait. This. Not being a part of the main series doesn't make something non-canon. Hell, it could be a supplementary addition, an installment that builds upon the world, or even a loved character getting his own mini-series. Take the Sonic comics, for instance. (I know the games and comics aren't related. Shut up. This is the comic continuity.) Knuckles got his own spin-off series and was stated to not be a part of the main comics (The 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series), but it's considered canon within the universe. Then you have to consider some things: It's Kojima's universe. He could make it canon if he wants to on a whim, which is highly possible since the above article and tweet were over a year ago. Secondly, he oversees the development as the executive producer IIRC Given the September interview with Platinum Games (Which was far more recent than the article or tweet), it is quite possible that them saying it's canon means that they confirmed it with Kojima some time beforehand. Whether it's canon or not won't bother me, though I do hope it is because that'd be pretty badass. |

Very first question asked is "Is the game canon?" He says it's canon, in the same world, and takes place 4 years later.
"We’ve only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can’t say more than this."
Yeah funny how he gives contradictory answers like that...
Seriously as that one guy mentioned this games "cannon" hardly exists as it is, and almost every entry is very different from each other. Still metal gear rising is a parody, and its hard to prover otherwise after the final boss.
Funny how you can't provide a single source with the word "canon" in it.
And **** MGS4's canonity with Screaming Mantis parodying Psycho Mantis and that fourth-wall breaking with Otacon telling you to change disc. That is a relatively tame compared to an actual plot element like the final boss randomly acquiring dragon ball z powers, telekinesis, and energy beams from just saying NANO MACHEENS SON! It hard to argue that this game is significantly less serious then the past games, and as a result really doesn't even fit into the cannon... |

Because if I check the dictionary entry for each word, it doesn't show the other word. And by the way, it's "canon" with one "n". |

Thats a terrible analogy considering how the Mario doesn't have a Cannon. Any way back to TC main question is the game Canon? No it really doesn't have anything to do with the past games, and doesn't really expand any of the narrative of the universe. Its a complete joke compared to the past games, and it shows. Still its self contained story is awesome, and you should really like it. |
