Metal Gears seem like a useless waste of resources

They are the size of a battleship and probably cost billions to make, and a single enhanced cyborg with a sword can slice it in half like butter and toss it around like a toy. Not very cost effective, and

*spoilers*

it was kinda silly for armstrong attempting to kill raiden with that big clumsy metal gear excelsus and have it chopped to pieces when he whopped raiden's *** with ease bare handed and broke his sword like a twig.

For future reference there is a spoiler tag....and that wasn't really that great of an effort of a spoiler warning either, usually people make an absurd amount of spaces at least.

There is a Ghost in my attic and he says: "It's very dark up here...." ....Oh right....and he also says: "Boo."

I've also wondered why Armstrong bothers to use EXCELSUS, since, yeah, his own body is clearly the best weapon to take up against a cyborg, and not just accidentally, but by design.

I figure he bothers to use EXCELSUS for two reasons, though: 1.) his activating EXCELSUS and stomping around in it destroys the base, and he probably wants the base destroyed, either to minimize tangible evidence of what really happened there or just to spice up the story of the "terrorist attack" by maximizing damage, and 2.) the world's still mired in the culture of the war economy, meaning that it's quite possible that World Marshal designed its conspiracy specifically so that there would be an opportunity to put one of its major new products (such as EXCELSUS) to some use or another, so that the U.S. could publicly declare, "We were attacked today, but thanks to our friends at World Marshal and one of their new products, at least the attackers were killed! We're glad to have such a great friend as World Marshal in these difficult times," so that World Marshal's stock would increase, etc. Using EXCELSUS is all part of the show.

In MGR they are, but originally they were a threat, it all changed after Rex.

He was going to use Excelsus against the world after dealing with Raiden, basically like what the past MG pilots were going to do after going up against Naked/Solid Snake.

Yeah, they're pretty much just for show, now that you've got guys like Armstrong. Nobody ever expects some suit to drop what he's doing and hurl a nuclear warhead several hundred miles into enemy territory and continue about his day as if nothing happened.

Good thing he played college ball. That should probably be a pre-req for anyone looking to undergo nanomachine colony implantation.

Excelsus wasn't even built for one and one combat but Armstrong is just being a true American by showing off his new expensive toy, don't cha know.

Agreed.

Metal Gears are the ultimate threat device, a bi-pedal armored tank armed with nukes. However, the problem is that infantry CAN get to it as proven by Snake in MG1 and MG2. REX was the first one to have countermeasures such as armored feet. RAY was the first anti-Metal Gear and designed without a nuke.
