I just started playing and I'm liking it so far. I'm just wondering if anyone has some helpful hints?

Sounds like Eve haha. Oh, what's that? You want to play the game? Nah, I have a warship, and I'm feeling bored. Goodbye! *boom *

Might have to download this after all.

1. Go here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=899

It's the "Training Grounds" subforum on the official DUST 514 forums. Most of the topics there are kept pretty well up to date, which is important, because as much as the game has supposedly been released, it's clearly still in beta. All the content in the game is changing regularly as new things are added and old things need rebalancing (sometimes because of new content, but just as often because they did it wrong last time). It's important to keep up.

2. Don't skill into something that's obviously broken and far more powerful than it should be - these things are usually first in line for a nerf, and you won't get back any of the SP you've spent after your chosen playstyle is beaten way further down than it needs to be.

3. Keep in mind that Militia gear is not only cheap, but requires no skill training to use. You can run Militia gear without needing to "waste" any SP to unlock that gear. Not everything comes with a Militia version, but there's a separate space in the market for that content - it's definitely work looking through these items and trying out a variety of fittings.

4. Don't expect the Starter Fits to hold up against high-end gear. They CAN be used as a starting point from which to create your own fittings though. If you want to create a cheap customised loadout, you can make a copy of a Starter Fit and replace or add items to adjust the performance.

5. Look through the WHOLE skill tree before deciding where to invest. There are a lot of skills which offer passive benefits. Training up Electronics gives you a range of scanning-related skills with various advantages. Profile Dampening makes you less visible to enemy scanners even without fitting your suit for stealth, for example. The Shield and Armour skills are very useful too. If you're focusing heavily on a particular defense type, training the relevant skill up will make you noticeably harder to kill. Even the secondary defense type - if you aren't dual-tanking - is worth training for a bit of an extra buffer against damage.

6. Almost every weapon-related skill has some sort of passive bonus attached to it. The base "Weaponry" skill is the big exception. When you've decided on a weapon you want to use, train Weaponry up ONLY as far as you need to, then start training the relevant skills to improve your choice of weapon. If your weapon has a Militia version, this will also benefit from the skills you train, even though you don't need the skill to use it. In most cases, the "Operation" skill (the earliest unlock) for a weapon will give you improved accuracy, and the "Proficiency" skill (unlocked at level 5 Operation) will give you a damage buff. There are exceptions - the Shotgun gets increased fire rate, but this still improves its DPS.

7. When discussing the game on forums, most long-time DUST players are EVE veterans or experienced MMO players, and many terms from the genre have become common in discussions. Try to gain at least a passing familiarity with these terms, but if someone is talking about things you don't understand, don't be afraid to ask. Even if they laugh at you for it, people will usually answer a polite question.

8. EVE Online - and by extension, DUST 514 - is home to some of the best (and worst) scammers in gaming. CCP encourage this behaviour, so be forewarned. Unless you have an intermediary who you can trust*, NEVER pay for anything in-game before you've received what you're paying for. If you get ripped off outside the official out-of-game trade channels, your best recourse is REVENGE, not a support ticket. They will just laugh at you.

* When I say "trust" I mean you know where they live and are bigger than them.

Good luck, and welcome to New Eden.

How come I die with 1 hit, and I literatlly empty a full clip on someone and they're still alive? Seems illogical.
