So I've had some people recommend to me the Martial Law DLC pack. Will it help so much that I should pay 5 bucks for it or should I save my money and do it regularly? The deciding factor for me honestly is how much easier it makes the game.

hardcore is easy [mostly] once you gear up for each room and know enemy spawns.
after a 2 normal playthroughs, the game should be committed to memory

1. I heard that I should basically just use the plasma cutter and force gun, is that true?

2. Should I spend money on plasma cutter ammo and power nodes? Should I open the node-locked doors?

3. How should i take out the little small things that come in numbers and latch on to you? or should i just avoid them?

any other tips welcome

1 - Ditch the plasma cutter when you can and sell the ammo. it is not the same strength as in the first one and does not dominate like it did there. I invested heavily in the Line Gun and Force Gun (and the pulse rifle) ...while also using the contact beam and detonator for specific areas. Line Gun alt shot takes out even the biggest enemies in one shot.

2 - Always carry a node on you to open the doors..going through on hardcore these areas will really come in handy. There are DLCs out there that you can play through (not suit DLC, but content-wise) that will allow you to access a few more doors throughout the game which may come in handy.

3 - Those little things can be deadly even though they are small...do NOT want to take any chances with hardcore so take them out if you cannot completely move on.
