Ubersampling, can you really tell the difference?

Less jaggies? At 1080p its hardly noticeable.

Character models? No difference

Environment? Ok this is the only major difference I notice, look at the table... omg it looks soooo real... It actually looks to crisp looking to the point it looks like brand new table! With it off the image is more believable, heh.

come on... whatever.

That's probably not the best scene to judge Ubersampling with, That's not an area that would generate a lot of jaggies in the first place. And Ubersampling isn't just to counter aliasing, it helps with definition and clarity in general, making for clearer outlines and less of the artifacts associated with 3D rendering in general.

I agree in general that Ubersampling isn't worth it, though. It's an absolutely staggering resource investment for what it actually accomplishes, I think they just included it so they could say they have a "game of the future" and so it would be featured on benchmarking sites. When the graphics card that can finally max The Witcher 2 comes out, you can bet your arse that will boost sales of The Witcher 2.

That's a crappy scene to try look for aliasing in. Darker scenes and scenes of lower contrast reduce the perceived intensity of aliasing, go to an outdoor environment and take some comparison shots.

The ground is more crisp

The ground near the bottom of the houses actually looks a little washed out

The roof in the back left looks shinny???

What can you guys notice?

It's improving the quality of the shadows pretty considerably, look at the stairs for the most obvious example of this. They look smoother and less pixelated, especially around the edges. You can also notice some very minor reduction in aliasing, most noticeable on the roofs of the houses. And the ground textures are a bit sharper, as you said. Texture everywhere are probably sharper, but it's especially on the ground. The glare on the roofs of the houses is probably a result of the Ubersampling influencing the way light from the sun is being calculated and reflected (presumably more accurately).

Also, where did you get that spiffy blue jacket so early in the game? Was it an import from The Witcher 1?

Yeah i can see the textures are a little crisper but that is normal for supersampling. Your shot without ubersampling is pretty jaggy free though, much moreso than my game with AA enabled. I found that i had excessive jaggies with AA enabled and could only get rid of them to an extent with ubersampling which is not feasible for gameplay on a 5770.

What graphics card do you have? apologies if its in your original post but I'm tired.

To be honest, that still isn't really that great of a screenshot...

I'm sure you probably wouldn't notice AA being on (even up to x16) compared to being off either.

Ubersampling is kind of a moot point since it still cannot fix the complete ugliness that happens when a moving shadow crosses any object in Chapter 1. It's not really noticeable that much at all in any other part of the game though.
