51793Moeman (Topic Creator) Posted 2/21/2012 2:25:55 PM (edited) | Got back to this the other day. I think I'm nearing the end... It's strange how short this game is. All that's really left is to upgrade the Excelion and go to Doom Island.

51793Moeman (Topic Creator) Posted 2/23/2012 4:38:47 AM | I finally finished the game - I got the secret ending.
[SPOILERS]
I know I might get made fun of... but I need to say this.
It might be because I was alone this time, but I started bawling when Maxim and Selan finally came home. Someone on these boards once made a great point.
It's 1993. You're a child. You play Lufia & the Fortress of Doom and witness Maxim and Selan's deaths. It's a heroic sacrifice, pretty cool, but you don't make much of it. Then two years later, you play Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals and find out that indeed, they didn't make it out alive. At this, you cry and wonder if there's any way to change it - heck, you might actually try to change it yourself, albeit futilely, by trying to collect the Iris treasures or something else.
Maxim's story isn't touched upon for Lufia: The Legend Returns or Lufia: The Ruins of Lore, and seven years go by with the Lufia title and series dormant.
Then Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals comes around and you beat it. No dice; the same outcome as it was back in 1993 and 1995. Frustrated, you leave it alone for a year or two before finally starting new game +, with all the blue goodies you kept. Finally, you beat a super boss and watch Maxim and Selan finally walk through that damn door to see their son - and Aunt Louisa, too.
And the dam just bursts.
Well, not many people's experiences are going to happen like that, but that's how I felt. Even though I'd seen it once before, my tears kept falling because they came home. It feels more emotional and more impacting because of the years it took for you to finally get little Jeros' parents home.
"I'm sorry, Jeros," I said dumbly to the screen, "I'm sorry it took so long. Mommy and Daddy are home now, they're safe. I'm sorry it took so long - it shouldn't have taken so long..."
I just had to share that. How emotional a video game can make you feel! --- I mean, you know your fanbase is bad when you have to go to FF boards for peace and decent discussions - heartlesshero17 |
SinReViPosted 2/23/2012 7:28:04 AM | SPOILERS
I agree that having the alternate ending in Lufia DS makes more of an impact, because if you've played Lufia I and II, you would have seen Maxim and Selan at least three times before. (Lufia I beginning, Lufia II ending, and the Normal Mode ending of Lufia DS).
Seeing the alternate was a nice surprise after having seen them die so many times from playing (and replaying) Lufia I and Lufia II.
Actually, a bit before the (Japanese) release, it was revealed there would be "slight story change". While playing through the New Game + Mode (in Japanese) I noticed some new thoughts dialogues from Iris, so as I started to get closer to the end, I thought that's what they meant with it. However, I didn't expect Erim suddenly warping in at the end, and having a different ending =P So that was quite a surprise. --- Lufia - Curse of the Sinistrals ~ OUT NOW!!! ~ Nintendo DS ~ |
LasseabergPosted 2/23/2012 8:26:41 AM | Spoilers for alternate ending
Yeah, it was great, wasn't it? A real treat for all of us who saw the original ending.
Don't get me wrong, part of the reason I love the ending so much to begin with is because it actually dares to be a downer. (Who said that a video game needs a happy ending, anyway?) Sure, the Sinistrals have been defeated, Parcelyte didn't get crushed under Doom island, and Maxims bloodline remains, but the price for all of that was steep.
2010- The year Maxim and Selan finally got to Guys damn party.
Beautiful ;_;
tl;dr: Additional ending, for all it's questionable canon (well, I guess Maxim and Seland not dying has all that much effect on the plot of future Lufia games), got me all warm and fuzzy.
