I have the dwarf in my party and i know i should be dumping everything into dex, but he's my only rogue in the party so i need him to open all the chest for me.

I think you need 40.

10 for simple, 20 for standard, 30 for complex, and 40 for master level locks and traps.
I look through the hourglass, waiting for time to pass.

27 cunning only if you have an item that gives a bonus to lockpicking.

You should put points into cunning anyway for critical damage.

To be a bit more precise :

Without items boosting picklock or disarm traps you need :

20 cunning to open all chests in act 1.

30 cunning to open all chests in act 2.

40 cunning to open all chests in act 3.

pretty sure i saw a couple chests that needed 40 to open in act 2.
lakers = 2010 champs

I only saw complex chests in act 2.

There is at least one master chest in Act 2 (docks at night) and at least one master trap (maybe it was the area with Xebenkeck? I don't recall).
One can only wonder at how such idiocy invariably comes to power.

I found a few Master chests in Act 2 too. I don't think it actually has to do with the act, I think the difficulty is automatically generated by level, so if you cheat your way to level 20 in act 1 you'd probably come across Master chests, while if you barrel through the content and reach act 3 at level 12 you'd probably not see anything above a Complex. So basically, if you max out all your XP potential, you might get to the point where a few of the remaining Act 2 chests are Master level.
