Yes and no. It works like this: You can add people to your rivals list, which is a new addition to the game. If you've played Metroid Prime: Hunters then you should be familiar with it. If not, what you do is in the game you request to become rivals with someone. If they accept (or if you accept in the event that they ask you) then you can speak to them. They're not friends, but you can still talk to them. The only question I have is if I will have to request people to be my rival after the match like in Hunters or if I can do it during the match.

So, say you can only party up with people on your friends list(assuming that's possible). And since you can speak with rivals, couldn't you exchange FCs via wiispeak/headset if you wanted to party up. Basically, can't you easily turn rivals into friends?
