You could get a set amount depending on how long you play (like in Halo: Reach). That way you still get some, but not nearly enough to significantly affect your online play. Or you could have an online profile and an offline profile to level up, but I don't know how well that would really work.
In Monster Hunter tri you can bring your character from the single player into online multiplayer and vice versa

^ you didnt vs. other players though. And offline had weaker monsters and weaker equipment. So Tri's offline and online cant apply here. But i do agree, pretty sweet. i loved farming low rank monsters within minutes. --- Sparkster returns after 16 years in.....
