Playing Conduit 2 online using an iPhone 4S WiFi Hotspot

#1_SignalPosted 12/16/2013 6:38:34 PM
As many of you may know, within about the next 10 days I'll be moving out to the country where there is no cable internet. I've been exploring other internet options for playing C2, so today I upgraded my AT&T service to include a WiFi Hotspot for my iPhone.

Sadly, it's not possible to play Conduit 2's multiplayer using an iPhone 4S hotspot running on a 4G AT&T network.

Using the WiiU, I was able to connect and play Ghosts online, and based on my FFA KDR of 0.5, I'd say the lag was likely similar to what I usually experience. Netflix on the WiiU also worked just fine with the hotspot.

Unfortunately, when I switched to the Wii emulator the connection was dropped. I tried several times and every time the Wii emulator loaded, the connection was lost, evidenced from both the hotspot side and the Wii side.

Then I decided to check it out on my old Wii to rule out the possibility of a problem with the emulator, but wasn't able to connect to the network at all. The Wii could see the hotspot on it's connection point list, and allowed me to enter the password, but it never connected.

Apparently the Nintendo Wi-Fi network isn't compatible with some aspect of the hotspot, or AT&T's 4G network.

It's possible that one of the dedicated hotspots with it's additional controls could be made to work, but the iPhone 4S hotspot is a total no-go for Wii games, while it seems to work fine with WiiU online stuff.

I still have my fingers crossed that the local DSL will work out, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that TCon didn't work well with DSL.

I'd love to hear other suggestions.

If your new provider gives you internet al all don't you just need to buy a Nyko Ethernet-USB thing. I have one.

Yeah, I have the LAN adapter also. Hopefully it will work out, because I'm out of ideas.

Can you run a speedtest on the U? curious, because if you can, I would be very interested to see the speed on a phones rinky dink connection. It cant be very good i dont think.

I ran a speedtest from my laptop using the iPhone hotspot.

Download was about 5 Mbps and upload was about 1Mbps, with a ping of just over 100ms.

Not terrible, but not outstanding either.

well, thats more than i thought, although when running a wii off of it, it should only be a fraction of that im sorry to say, which may be unplayable. Not entirely certain, because ive never ran mine off of that slow of a connection, so maybe and hopefully am wrong and you can work somethin out!

I think there are a few people here that are running off DSL connections with similar speeds, and from what I've read FPS don't seem to require very much bandwidth, they just need a low ping.

CoD Ghosts on the WiiU ran perfectly fine with this connection, and I was able to stream Netflix without an appreciable hit in quality, however, this is slower than my cable connection, and with a higher ping.

I think the problem may have been the security encryption, which I was not able to turn off on my phone.
