It works like TvC, were it's essentially push blocking It also act's as a extra shield in a sense, where in a sceneria were your getting chipped say by Storm's hail storm you rapidly advance guard to negate as much chip as possible. Making the chip you take minimal.
You'll notice a good diffrence in chip when you advance guard as opposed to just guarding.

SSF4 does not have advance guard. TvC and MvC3 are the only games I know of that uses this feature.
