While the Human Engineer is a great character, I think that he's probably not the best for a first solo. Simply put, he doesn't have the rugged durability that makes a character solo-viable. Now, there are members of this board that could certainly do it with the Engineer, but I wouldn't recommend it for the first time.
The reason I picked both the Trooper and the Justicar is because both have the ability to sustain a good amount of damage before going down. I also picked them because they both have dodges, and the Trooper also gets considerably high DPS from Flamer. With a good assault rifle, the Justicar gets a lot of damage too with Warp Rounds equipped. Just Reave a target and then lay into them.
Giant is a really good solo map, or Hazard Giant if you're using a grenade class since you get 2 grenades instead of 1. I've also found Hazard Reactor to be great for kiting, but several people disagree with me to due to some crappy objectives.
